Good Cover Song Ideas

Post by MrTwain »

We all understand that there are many BN'ers and Parrotheads that don't like it when Jimmy covers someone else's song. And... I think I understand and appreciate the reasons behind that. However, Jimmy's selective use of cover songs on his albums and in his concerts does not bother me. I have my reasons. For purposes of this thread, could we perhaps try to focus on naming some cool buffett-ish songs that you wish Jimmy would cover? I have a few. Here are two:
  • Maria (Shut Up And Kiss Me) - Willie Nelson
  • Say Hey (I Love You) - Michael Franti & Spearhead
What are your cover song ideas?

How about more originals? Well, just so long as they're more inspired than We're Still Here.

I have to tell you the one song I wanted to hear him cover he did for "Hoot"

"Wondering Where the Lions Are" and I think it might be as good as the orginal.

“Girl I Miss You”…..a rich_big original I have been playing for 15+ years. But it seems Jimmy ignores all the tapes I have sent him

Blackbird (solo acoustic as final encore), Sgt Pepper, or Daytripper would all be cool.

all great songs but if you are an artist with 100's of your own songs
play those first and if you wish in hour 8-9 of the concert play covers

I have to pull a Nay Nay on this one. He royally messed up On The Road Again. If Jimmy was to even try to attempt Willie again, I think we would need to have to raise Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings from the dead to make sure Jimmy never did this again.

Oh man, that is a great suggestion and a fantastic song that I haven't listened to in years! I'm going to push my early Neil Diamond back into the iPod rotation.

Captain Sunshine, make me drink wine, Make me feel fine when I'm feelin' wrongly down.
He don't take much, he don't make much,
But ah, to be such a man as he,
and walk so pure between the earth and the sea.
Captain Sunshine, he do me fine, Make the words rhyme when he knows the tune is sad.
He don't take much, he don't make much,
But ah, to be such a man as he,
and walk so pure between the earth and the sea.

He don't take much, he don't make much,
But ah, to be such a man as he, and walk so pure between the earth and the sea.

Today I put in a Steve Goodman CD and when "Would You Like to Learn to Dance?" came on, I thought of this post. I think it'd be a great slow song (too few of those in most shows) or final acoustic encore.

That said, of course, I'd prefer to hear more of HIS old stuff :)

It's so strange. You keep sending letters and tapes and all he ever sends back are reminder copies of the restraining order. It's like he's not even listening to it!

Why? I'd like to hear more original stuff...don't get me wrong, covers are great to get you going, but it seems like he has a cover or 7 on all his new stuff...when he releases new stuff. :-?

I'd rather hear new original material than cover songs myself but if he can't do any better than some of the dribble he's come up with in recent years (Coast of Carolina not withstanding) then I'm fine with him doing songs by other artists, especially when it's the likes of Gillian Welch, Guy Clark, Mary Gauthier, Jesse Winchester, etc. The only thing is, when he used to cover folks like Jesse back in the day he stood a good chance of outdoing the original, now it's quite the opposite. Buffett's true knack now seems to be his writing (see his recent Outer Banks journal entries). I'd also rather see him do that than turn in subpar original material, though I could certainly do without the plugs for Landshark and Radio Margaritaville. His writing is good enough where he doesn't need to stoop to that level. When he does, it greatly detracts from it since it's totally unnecessary.
