Where is he when we need him! I used to spend a lot of time on the TA site. If there was a concise guide to help answer questions, it might help. I know one of the first questions asked would be...who make the best apple martini.Bfan53again wrote:Great idea.....maybe Jack could collaborate with other BNers living there for the "Ultimate" Guide to Key West.......tigzoe wrote:Maybe Jack's next book should be a BN survival guide for KW.Bfan53again wrote:Ditto.....BNers are the greatest source of reliable travel tips!tigzoe wrote:Good to know for the next trip!jons211 wrote:Did you check out the Sports Page bar next door before going into Peppers? Get a buzz on.
Then, go to Mr. Z's on Southard (just east off of Duval) and have a late night (around 2am) cheesesteak.
It's a little bit of KW heaven.

Sad to admit, but at my age, a cheesesteak at 2 am, well, that's just out of the question.......but still a great "insider" tip!sailingagain wrote:Get a buzz on.

Cat, Wayne and Aaron.
Just an update regarding the Papa Hemingway Look a Like Contest. Here we are posing with our neighbor, Aaron "Hemingway" this weekend. Aaron will be competing for the first time. We have 12 couples coming down to cheer him on! Only eight more weeks!

On our last trip to KW we picked up a brochure on the Truman Annex condos for rent. They look pretty nice.

Re: FL Keys / Key West
We are beginning to finalize our plans for our Key West vacation in July. Besides the festivities surrounding the Papa Hemingway Look a Like contest, we have decided to spend one afternoon snorkeling the reefs with Sunset Watersports and one evening with Ted (Quint) at the Key West Ghost and Mysteries Tour. Can anyone recommend any other 'MUST DO'S"?

For snorkeling, I would actually recommend either Danger charters http://www.dangercharters.com/ or Floridays http://www.floridays.org/ both of them have nicer boats and smaller crowds. A couple of other things I always recommend is definitely getting down to Schooner Wharf twice, once in the afternoon for Michael McCloud and once in the even for the magic bar. Frank, the magician, is one of the best close up magicians in the world. (His father is credited with creating close up magic 50 years ago.) Another thing is checking out the sunset from the top of the La Concha hotel on the 400 block of Duval (it's the tallest building on the island, you can see all of old town from up there, and there's a bar up there) and also from the Tiki bar at the Galleon resort at the end of front street.catsway wrote:We are beginning to finalize our plans for our Key West vacation in July. All that plus, you know, having a drink at my bar.

Thank you Jack! We were hoping you would give us some suggestions. Smaller groups on the snorkeling trip are good. I have seen my share of Butt Fish and Elbow Fish.popcornjack wrote:For snorkeling, I would actually recommend either Danger charters http://www.dangercharters.com/ or Floridays http://www.floridays.org/ both of them have nicer boats and smaller crowds. I stayed at the Tropical Inn one time..........great place. Ours was the little room with double doors that open onto a small patio just off the pool. The Inn is located just around the corner from The Blue Heaven......yummy BBQ shrimp! The folks at the Tropical Inn will order up some one-speed bikes for you and will have them delivered to the hotel for you. One balmy night, we rode across town on our bikes from the Tropical Inn to Louie's Backyard for dinner. Was wearing a Mexican circle skirt, a light shawl, sandals. Felt like I was in a movie the entire night. Pretty damn romantic place, that Key West!

I hear that singer Scott Kirby is part owner in a new KW bar called "Smokin' Tuna Saloon" on Charles Street (I think) on June 17. Another drinking stop in Key West.....

We chose the Tropical Inn since they would accommodate Mr. Utley. Then we chose the Gypies Mermaid's Escape guestroom beacuse of this tantilizing description:Pepe T. It’s rumored that she was a Wild Child, the daughter of a musical icon whose name you know. Strong-willed and adventurous, she left home younger than most. Drifting from port to port, in search of herself, her soulful songwriting brought her unsought fame. But she’s always been shy of the spotlight.
Her traveling companions are an old, beat-up guitar that could tell some tales of its own, a floppy hat, and a pair of oversized sunglasses that allow her the privacy she craves. Whenever she’s in town, she insists on the room adjacent the upstairs veranda. Says she gathers artistic inspiration from the street scene passing by below … observing while remaining unobserved, you know.
Recently, she brought us some treasures from her travels, and chose a new color for the room. She calls it “dreamsicle”. You’ll recognize it immediately.
So we revamped things to suit her and named the delicious result in her honor: the Gypsy Mermaid’s Escape. There’s a bit of her quicksilver aura captured here … at once intriguing and exciting, yet tantalizingly elusive. Choose it for yourself and see what we mean.
Dreamsicle? Makes you wonder who the Mermaid is.

Tantalizing. Each room has its own Guest Book.......perhaps you will find some hints there. Or the proprietors may be willing to divulge, since it will be your room, as well? (And of course you will share with your Changes in Latitudes Phriends, yes?)
