Back in college in the late 70s early 80s I was a short order cook at the politically incorrectly named Sambo's Restaurant chain (similiar to Denny's) for a few years and I also at a Denny's Restaurant for a couple of years. Graveyard shift (10pm - 6am with 8am college classes). As a broke college student, I ate there morning, noon and night for almost 4 years as an employee.

After I graduated it took me 2 decades before I even set foot in the place again. I couldn't stand the sight of a Denny's breakfast plate.

I used to eat at Denny’s for free all the time. They had a deal, when you order, they put a timer on your table, and if the food wasn’t served in 10 mins it was free. Well, here’s the scam (they got rid of this deal years ago). I ordered, stole the timer and left before the food got there. Then went to another Denny’s, set the clock, then ordered. The waitress would put her timer down, she walked away, I did the swith-a-roo, and they never got my food to me within the time limit. I ate for free all over the state for about a month.

After I got out of college, I used to work at Bennigans (moment of silence). They used to have the same sort of deal-15 minutes or it was free. There were these group of people that used to come in (like 10-12 people) seperate checks, wanting to do the 15 minutes or it was free. They tried the same thing with the switch-a-roo on the clocks. I caught them once told my manager, he said he would not pay for their lunch. It was pretty sleazy on their part. If you got that table, they'd tip on a $50 worth of lunch, like $3.

I was out and about earlier this morning, and thought I'd check out the "Free Slam" scene...
At the local Denny's (in a decent suburb of SD) it looked like a scene from outside the local welfare office,
and lined up down the street! ..all for a free breakfast?? F*** that!

...I grabbed a couple 99c Breakfast Jacks around the corner and saved myself 2 hours in line
