Beam Me Up Scotty......

As a Star Trek fan from way back, I've always dreamt of someday there being a transporter like the crew of the Enterprise had.
Seems like the idea isn't that far fetched any more.......

Just think, in the middle of winter you go to some kind of public transporter site, change into your shorts, flip flops, and flowered shirt. Then.....poof......you're standing on some sandy white beach in the Caribbean!

As awesome as that sounds you also have to think if it went into the wrong hands or a certain amount of money just made the parts "disappear". Next thing you know people will be teleporting terrorists and bombs right into the heart of major cities. Plus what kind of security could you have on teleportation devices? Please take off your shoes as we check for drugs and metal? And who's going to be the first to step into one for a test ride. I'm sorry as cool as it sounds I just don't see it happening.

This thinking is going way too deep for me.......I just want to transport myself to exotic locales. Somebody else needs to screen for all of those terrorist types.....

***GEEK ALERT!!!***
Star Trek transporters were equipped with filters that could screen out any bad stuff (bombs/weapons etc...) so there would never be any unnecessary threat to the Enterprise.
end ***GEEK ALERT!!!***

A transporter would be cool.
Or even better.... a holodeck....

So should we forbid any technological advancements because someone might *possibly* misuse them? We'd be back to rocks and sticks in no time at all.
On the plus side, nobody could hijack a teleportation trip and fly it into a building.
A very good essay on the possibilities is "Theory and Practice of Teleportation," by Larry Niven, anthologized in a book called
All the Myriad Ways. Wonderful book, which includes the side-splitting essay, "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex, or why can't Superman get a date?" *That* one is available online - Google it.
