Do you support the Obama "stimulus package"?

Post by bestseller92 »

Just a yes or no. I do not. I do not consider spending almost a trillion dollars that we do not have wise, and don't think that the pork barrel projects contained in this bill constitute a "stimulus package".

What's your thoughts? Do you support this legislation?

I do not think that most people have a full understanding of what the package entails, nor do i think that most of the effects will be seen for several months, therefore I do not think it's question that most people without an advanced degree in economics can answer.

The sad thing is, I don't think most CONGRESSMEN/WOMEN have a full understanding of what this package entails.

The sad thing is, I can't in good conscience say it would be different with a GOP congress, because the GOP congress from 2001-2006 spent money like it was going out of style. They abandoned fiscal conservatism, to their detriment.

Ron Paul/Tom Coburn 2012! :)

As much as I would like to see all of these so-called free market capitalists (Wall Street, Big Three Auto, etc) go out of business for being such poor businessmen (that's how it's supposed to work so I've been told), the prospect of a complete financial meltdown and ensuing global depression doesn't thrill me. I think big money will have to be spent. I think Republican opposition in Congress is just political posturing - they know it will pass over their opposition and they are secretly relieved that they won't have to 'wear it' if things go wrong.

I'm uncomfortable with the price tag, but to put it in perspective, the ultimate cost of the unnecessary and ill-conceived Iraq invasion may be close to 3 trillion dollars. I don't hear many folks screaming about that one . . .

Maybe if we were all issued uniforms and ranks and regular paychecks from the U.S. military establishment the complaints about government spending would disappear overnight. That seems to be the way it works.

Because I don't define myself with either party (which is just retarded . . . IMO) I do support his plan. I don't fully understand it. Nobody here does. Nobody anywhere not involved in directly building this plan does. I trust Obama is trying to do the right thing (there are a couple billion ear marked to companies and firms directly related to the Obama's but despite the promised "Change" I guess that is to be expected since it is Washington DC).

So . . . Yes. I support Obama here just like I supported Clinton AND W (wasn't old enough to follow H.W.).

PS. I do tend to lean towards Smaller Government.

Politics aside, I don't support the package because we're basically giving money to companies who have shown a lack of responsibility with the money they ALREADY got

In one example, one bank used bailout funds to give their executives bonuses.
In another example, one bank used bailout funds to take over another (or try to....)
BTW the salary cap on executives at 500K does NOT include bonuses (therefore what good does the cap do anyway?)
Also it only includes the top 25 positions (so expect #26 to be paid handsomely...)

Aren't they supposed to pay us back after they "get on their feet". Doesn't this strike anyone as the same concept of lending money to family and friends?

And sadly the same people who will eventually pay for this bailout stll can't get their house refinanced and are being driven out of their homes (so who's REALLY getting bailed out here???)

EDIT:

Above I said I supported it. Reading over some other people's responses I want to add that OF COURSE I would rather have the government take the money and give it back to the people. It IS our money after all. But since that will never happen . . . I am giving his plan a chance. Like I said, I believe in smaller government so I hope this massive spending does something . . . big government rarely works.

No I don't support it. I am amazed that it was even considered. Now we have a President, who as a Senator was part of the body responsible for America's pocketbook. He didn't inherit this, he helped create it. Now we are supposed to accept his ideas on how to get out of this hole?

I like that some of da posts are about "pork" Less then 5% of this package is "pork" Closer to 2%. But thats my opinion. Look at the bright side, most of us will be worm food when these bills come due. I don't know if that would be funny or sad. We have to do something about this problem. Throwing money at it didn't work....yet. Buying toxic assets I don't think will cover the problem. As well as putting our social security in da stock market. Imagine that is Your SS down 50% like my 401K.

I really don't want a check to stimulate my pocketbook. increase the time You can collect unemployment. That would be a start. Any more ideas?

As Green1 said Omama was part of the body responsible for America's pocketbook Partly, Yes. But didn't the GOP have most of the Congress and House after their " Contract with America"? Now that was a joke! Not what I wrote, but the "Contract with America".

There's more than enough blame to go around.

I agree - not as much pork as everyone thinks. We have to do something. If we don't - you think it's bad now - just wait.... At least Pres Obama has been meeting for almost a year with top economists to try and come up with the best plan. He is honestly sincere in trying to help and I welcome THAT change!!!!! The plan may not be perfect - but I think weneed to really look at it - contact yoursenator if you don't like something - don't just complain on the board how it sucks - senators want to hear from their constituants... so unless someone here has a plan that is better (and I wouldwelcome that as well!!) - we need to support it or make your voice heard to the right people.
