I Rescued A Human Today

I Rescued A Human Today by Janine Allen

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

Having been a dog & cat owner my whole life and serving many years on the board of the local animal shelter all I can say is........thanks for a wonderful story!

The greatest thing that any pet brings to our lives is unconditional love. No strings. Just love.

We all need that, especially today........

Awwww man....

i live for the day when there are no more homeless pets. I rescued a kitten from certain death back in Dec. As much as I wanted to keep her, it couldn't have happened at a worse time in my life, so I was forced to take her to the animal shelter, with the condition that I was her "person of last resort". When things settled down I was planning on adopting her...but to my surprise she was adopted within 11 days of being brought in. So while I was sad, I was also happy that she got a home and someone to love and care for her. Her picture is up with all our other pets. And if someone had gotten a video of me attempting to catch her, I'm sure they would have won the $10,000 prize. She was under the house, so I was facedown in the dirt (eeeeeeeeeeeek), got ahold of her only to have her squirm out of my grip after sinking her teeth into my palm. I fell on my face twice while chasing her around the yard. I put food out for her and just kept talking to her, eventually she let me pet her and I finally was able to grab her and not let go. Poor thing was literally starving, I'd never seen anything so skinny. If the cold and lack of food hadn't killed her, the tenting of the house definitely would have. I think about her every day.... :D

Thanks for posting that, Ann. And I miss you sooo much! (((((((Ann))))))

Thank you so much for posting this. It really made my day. I was "rescued" by two cats July of last year. I had never had a pet in my life and I can say it is the best think I have ever done. My house is now full of love and laughter. I am as happy to see them when I get home as they are to see me. [smilie=battingeyes.gif] [smilie=battingeyes.gif]

*sniff* Thank you, Ann!!!!!!!

Half the critters that have rescued me have tried to kill me in the process... :o

CJ (Claws & Jaws): I went up a tree to get this starving kitten and she ripped me to shreds before I got her to the car. She's still skittish and quick to bite.

Katie (Katharine Hepburn): part Maine Coon, and as feisty as they come. I have little doubt she was at the pound because she's so aggressive. Purring one minute and slicing you open the next. I have fresh scars...

Smokey: half Siamese, abandoned as a newborn. I bottle-fed him and his littermate every two hours for a couple of weeks. He's dumber than a box of rocks, but I love him.

Dear heavens Jen!

We were lucky. When we rescued Attilla last year, he turned out to be quite the sweet kitty.

I had been scared to death of him at first (hence the name) He always hissed when he came to eat and looked at us like he was contemplating what we'd look like without our various body parts.

We found out later that he has been all four paw declawed and used a "good offense" as his defense. That poor cat was outdoors for a year with no claws...

My Sons dog Skittles saved us 13+ years ago. The people that owned her threw her away ( "Set her free") as they said. I shudder to think what would become of us if she was not there. He named her Skittles.
