Dukes is a geat time! We were at the Hula Grill (the restaurant right above Dukes) on Wednesday night and Duke's musicians were playing right below us. We had a great table looking out over the beach. We had to head to the airport right after that and it was a great send off...
Duke's on Sunday- it's for real.

We've brought floods, record cold and wind and, when we went to see the volcano, it stopped flowing for the first time in years.

I'm willing to give it a try
It's hard to believe that a week ago we were sitting at Dukes getting ready to go to Jake's performance.

I know that we were around many of you, but in all of the excitement we forgot to introduce ourselves to each other. I guess that we are just going to have to go back to the islands to meet up. Sorry we missed all of you great people. It was sad to think that as I was posting last night, that a week had past since we were there. One good thing, before I left I stopped by the Tabora Art Gallery (located on the ground level of the Outrigger) and picked up a piece by Juno Galang of Duke's with Diamond head in the reflection of the windows. It is beautiful and I can't wait for it to arrive. It won't be the same as being there, but it will bring back the great memories and make me want to go back.nutmeg wrote:Indianaph....from the look of your picture...you must have been a few tables away from a table of 5 BNers n Sunday!

The next time you get mad, ask yourself the following question. Will it will matter a year from now?
If it won't, breathe in, breathe out and move on. Life is short, remember to have fun along the way.

My wife and I were just to the left of the stage (platform) from Henry in the second row. It was a great time. One reason we probably didn't meet everyone was that is got pretty packed. It really did live up to all the hype. Henry was awesome. Once I figure how to post the pictures we took, I'll put them up. It was the best way to end our 10 days on the island. We literally finished the concert at 6:00, walked down the beach to the Sheraton, got our bags, got a taxi and left for our 9:50pm flight. If that is our last memory of Hawaii, I think its pretty darn good. Anyone who goes to Oahu and misses Duke's on Sunday doesn't have a complete trip.nutmeg wrote:Indianaph....from the look of your picture...you must have been a few tables away from a table of 5 BNers n Sunday!

(I could have done this instead of reading the paper waiting for the shuttle to come in... It didn't arrive until about 6:50)

Re: Duke's on Sunday- it's for real.
My late (and very wise) grandparents bought property in Waikiki back in the early 1950s (a cluster of 3 bungalow cottages that later became an apartment building). My grandfather loved the Waikiki lifestyle- especially in those early years- and spent most of his waking hours (when he wasn't working) down there among that most fascinating beach culture -swimming and surfing, etc. In fact he taught me to swim there in front of the Moana Hotel many, many years ago.
Interestingly enough, among those he called his friends in those days was the famous Duke Kahanamoku. I never met Duke but my grandfather held him in the highest regard and told many stories of those early days surfing, swimming and being ambassadors of the aloha spirit -with the real "beachboys" of that bygone era.
So people there's a reason why if feels so good to be down there in that most special of places - it's because the Duke's spirit (along with those of so many other wonderful characters) still linger- and will forever.
P.S.: With Waikiki, there's much more than meets the eye. A lot of history and lore tell a much richer story than just that of the prevailing "tourist mecca" image. Many of the early monarchy of the Islands considered that area sacred ground- choosing to live there above other areas on the island. That magic is still prevalent today even with all the hoards of visitors. Check out this book on Waikiki if this stuff interests you -it's one of my favorites...it's called "Waikiki- Yesteryear". It gives a very cool historical perspective on the area.

It's been a lovely cruise.
