Duke's on Sunday- it's for real.

We were visiting family in Hawaii last week- and as chance would have it, stopped in at Duke's in Waikiki...on Sunday.
It was unbelievable! The mood, the atmosphere and of course, the people were incredible. The song is for real! I did some taping, edited it and put it to Jimmy's song- take a look if you're interested. And if you're going to Jimmy's concert at the Waikiki you MUST make time for Duke's on Sunday...4-6PM.

To those who might not be following this. "Duke's on Sunday" was written by Henry Kapono , a beloved island music legend-formerly of the duo "Cecilio and Kapono". Jimmy covered his song on " Take the Weather with You". Henry and his band play every Sunday at Duke's- it's where we plan to be every Sunday afternoon on Oahu when we're there.

Very nice! Good job! I remember my first time there . . . we were passin' by and I told my wife "wow, that sounds just like C&K singing in there!" But it couldn't be, since they weren't singing together any more. We went in and it was the K part of C&K! We spent the rest of the afternoon there and made it a point of revisiting every trip back to HNL.

Another great place we frequent when go back is the Hau Tree Lanai Restaurant. This place is one of the best kept secrets in Waikiki. It's located somewhat near the Waikiki Shell on Sans Souci Beach across Kapilolani Park (next to the Old Natatorium). It's in the New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel. It's a world away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki- but just a 10 minute walk from there. Great ambiance and food- right on a quiet, peaceful beach- under a cascading Hau Tree. Great for breakfast!

Trader, you coming to Vegas in May? Sounds like you got away to the islands from the snow up north (in laws live in Sandpoint) for at least a little while.

Hey FinsUp
We'll be doing the usual October in Vegas. If I had my way we'd be doing both May & Oct in Vegas-as well as Seattle. But the economy demands I pace myself (as does my wife). I have a lot of family in Hawaii (I grew up there) and we go back about every 6 mos. to visit- my folks are getting on in years... and it's always hard to pass up staying free.
You're absolutely right about the snow. Over 100 inches in December alone. That was another reason to get out of Dodge & head to the Islands. BTW if you're ever in CdA on your way up to Sandpoint private message me and we 'll set up a time to share a Longboard on the back deck here (in the summer that is). 8)

Take care my friend

Sounds great. Should be there around the 4th of July. Man there is no place more beautiful then that neck of the woods (but only if you keep those WA people out though!)

The first time I went to Duke's, in 2005, Henry and his band were out there playing and Jimmy walked out to join them. They only did one song together, Margaritaville. And I think it was the only time in the week I was in Hawaii that I didn't have my camera with me.

The woman in my avatar is one of the bartenders at the Hawaiian Tropic Zone restaurant. Or she was, it's closed for renovations and isn't supposed to reopen until May.

Is that where the tailgate will be for the 11/24 show at MSG?

It's kind of expensive, $5 beers at Happy Hour, $8 other times. And if what I hear is true, it's going to be much smaller when it reopens.

:sigh:

I've been jonesin' for Hawaii this week for some reason! Go figure, right? I even looked through my pics from Oct 07 again.

I could handle the mellow happy vibe, at Duke's on Sunday.

Let's get together and do this again! :D :D :D :D

TraderRick is right on. I can't believe that we were there a week ago. We ate dinner there listening to Henry playing and watching the sunset. The place does have a great atmosphere. I took this picture from my phone, so pardon the quality:

This was taken on 03/01/2009 the night after the concert at the Waikiki Shell. To make it even better, we went back to the Beachcomber after dinner to catch Jake for the thrid time in three days. What a great trip. Can't wait to get back to the islands.

Man after a week I'm STILL suffering from Post-Hawaiian Vacation Separation
