big whoop. Conveniently overlooked:

Clinton said both nations will continue to hold frank discussions on crucial human rights issues, such as Tibet and freedom of expression in China. In the past, Clinton has been an outspoken, staunch critic of China's human rights stance.

I have nothing further to add.

I wonder what our collective reaction would have been if I just said the statement had been made at a meeting between the U.S. Secretary of State and the Chinese President. If I hadn't known any better I (like most people) would have assumed the Chinese President made the statement, and we would have been raging our way through this thread. Instead, most of us are standing here with our mouths hanging open wondering why our elected officials aren't raging...... Could it be that we're in the absolutely sh*tty position of having CHINA holding the majority of our national debt, so we can't afford to p*ss them off? We're in deep sh*t, mark my words..... :-? :-?

We have a winner!

Thinking about this tonight on the way home. China is the bank we've run up the national credit cards on.

agreed.

and also . . .
The United States will continue to press China on issues such as Tibet, Taiwan and human rights, she told reporters accompanying her.

"But our pressing on those issues can't interfere with the global economic crisis, the global climate change crisis and the security crises," she said.

. . .

Human rights, a traditional topic in discussions between the two countries, was broached during Saturday's meeting between Clinton and Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, who agreed to engage in a continuous discussion on the issue.
Perhaps Secretary of State Clinton has a deeper grasp of the issues currently affecting the security and survival of this nation than her many detractors here at BN. You can't do a damn thing for human rights in China when your economy is in an advanced state of collapse.

There is a certain irony in this situation. Our own record on human rights won't stand up very well to an impartial scrutiny. Just what kind of moral leverage do we supposedly possess that we should dictate terms to the Chinese on anything? As far as financial or military leverage, maybe some here haven't been keeping up with current events. We hold nothing over China but a numerical superiority in nuclear weapons, which for obvious reasons are completely unusable if we are discussing people's human rights.

Not overlooked at all. I provided the link to the entire article. She still said what she said......

You've got to look at and read the facts in the article a little closer.
We really don't have a strong leg to stand on with China, and I've been railing about this
everytime all of you talk about how much you love shopping at Wal-Mart...
China, the world's top holder of U.S. debt, wants to ensure liquidity and security in its dealings with U.S. treasury bonds.

"We did use foreign exchange reserves to buy U.S. treasury bonds. Our principle of using reserves is to ensure security and liquidity," Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi told reporters.

China-U.S. trade volume rose by 10.5 percent in 2008 to 333.7 billion U.S. dollars, Xinhua reported.
We simply cannot go around stepping on toes anymore just because we have "more guns" (although I know that's the prevailing belief around here)
Why do you think we let Saudi Arabia continue to completely suppress rights of women??

THEY BOTH NOW PULL OUR FINANCIAL PURSE STRINGS LIKE A HUGE WAL-MART SHOPPING PUPPET!!

I agree with you, Brad, but I still think it's a bad thing for the U.S. Secretary of State to actually SAY that human rights are less important than anything.... It's bad enough that we're forced to put up with it (like in Saudi) but to make a statement like that is to take a giant step onto a very slippery slope. If human rights in China aren't important, how long will it be before human rights in America aren't important? Scary......

And I also forgot my usual disclaimer: I'm a registered independent. This isn't about Democrats or Republicans. I have an equal opportunity dislike for most politicians from all parties. If this had been a Republican Secretary of State I'd have the same issues.....

..and I agree with what you're saying too, Jen.

It upsets me very much to watch us leverage away our financial and moral high ground in my lifetime.
The kind of greed that has been exhibited in our markets by our leaders is the kind of stuff that has Karl Marx laughing in his grave.

Same here. A very sad state of affairs, and I'm not sure anything but a total house-cleaning in Washington is going to fix it, but I don't see that happening. The Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals, love to point fingers and blame "them" for the condition we're in. I blame ALL of them. Washington is rotten at the core and the founding fathers are rolling in their graves. :-?

It is sort of like the old question your Mom or other adult, would ask of you as a child, when you did something wrong: "If Johnny jumped off a cliff, would you ?"

There are more positive things accomplished in kindergarten, than will ever happen in our Congress and Senate. The politicians from both sides, fight worse than the keets, and seldom accomplish any good or even know what they are doing. Such as this so called "Stimulus Bill" that no one has ever read. They forget what they were sent there for: To represent us and not some fracking party line.

Now we have Hillary and the Chinese saying what about something as basic as "Human Rights"? If we can't agree about simple basic human rights, then just what can we agree on?

There is definitely something wrong with our system whem multi-millions of $$$USD are spent to get a job that pays $250K a year or less.
Millions of $USD that could be much better spent elsewhere. All to do what??? To get a job and get to argue worse than a bunch of 4 year old kids??? Aren't these people suppose to be "highly educated" adults and know what is best for everyone else and our Nation?

What is the old saying about "Absolute Power"? Something along the lines "absolute power corrupts, power corrupts absolutely." We as a people and a Nation have been repeatedly warned. Not many (or at least not enough) apparently listened. Then or now.

All of our Founding Fathers would be severely PO'ed with what has become of the system and Legacy they left for us and for what has been allowed to happen to it. Though no doubt some were quite afraid of it happening, such as Thomas Jefferson.

"We The People" and a "Melting Pot Society" have become, "WHAT???"

So what is going to happen besides more talk? Will anything actually be accomplished and an actual change with China? China does not seem about to change so where does that leave the rest?

I could not agree more. Between Clinton, Holder, and a few others, you would think they would wait a little longer before putting their feet in their mouth.

I agree, the first two months have been one bad decision after another. It makes you wonder what else can they say or do at this point. I only hope that when they are done there is something left for us to zip tie and duct tape back together.
