Seaplanes return?? Cross you fingers

Post by Summerlover »

Here's a link I found on Tripadvisor. Thought I'd share.

We are going to KW in May, first time. This was supposed to be one of the things we absolutely had to do. Then they went out of business. So who knows, maybe they will be back in before we go.

Thank you for sharing. We'll be in KW on March 23rd. We'll keep watching the site to see if they start flying before then. We flew from St. Thomas to St. Croix on Seaborne Air October, 2008. The seaplane was a blast. The landing was the biggest thrill....hummm, there's a song in that somewhere.

Hopefully they will be able to get the seaplanes back up and going. We did this a few years ago and it was a blast. The views were great. I will say the planes were getting a little old and rundown. I had also seen somewhere that last year one of the seaplanes brokedown out at the Dry Tortugas. Then when they were having it hauled back to Key West, by dragging with a boat, that the plane somehow sank. This may have been the straw that broke the camels back for the company. The eaplane was a great option to take rather than the ferry. The landing on water and the takeoff on the water was very cool. Watching the sealife below (turtles, sharks etc) was great. The aerial views of the Fort, the lighthouse past the park and Key West all made he trip very worthwhile. I'm glad we did it when we did.

REALLY!!!!!! Can you confirm if they've been taking paying passengers for rides? We'll be heading there in 157 hours and 36 minutes...not that I'm counting down or anything :pirate: This would be a must do for us, especially if I could talk them into letting me land her

All I know is that I have seen them flying for a while. They had one go down last year and didn't fly for a while but are in the air again.

Not sure if the seaplanes are flying again. I did just try the number that is listed for the Seaplanes of Key West and it is disconnected. The website for Seaplanes of Key West has also been down for some time now. There may be another group that is doing this now but so far no info on it.

If you are going down to Key West check with the different tour operators just off of Duval close to the Gulf. They normally can book you into any of the things going on, sunset cruises, ferry service to dry tortugas, etc. They will have brochures on each of the different trips that are available. I'm sure if you book through them they get some type of a percentage of the sale.

With all that said, I just called to the Key West Chamber of Commerce. They said that there are no companies currently operating seaplane rides. Perhaps there have been some people that have their own seaplanes that have flown in.

There is an aerial tour operating that flies you in an open air bi-plane. This just flies over the Key West area and does not land on the water (at least hopefully not).

Sorry, wish I had better news for everyone that wants to fly on the seaplanes. Again, glad we did when we did.

As the woman from the Key West Chamber said, "Sorry, But please do come on down to Key West".
