Looking for happiness — it's family-friendly communities for some, tropical paradise or the rugged West for others. A survey of Americans' well-being, conducted by Gallup in partnership with Healthways and America's Health Insurance Plans, gives high marks to Utah, which boasts lots of outdoor recreation for its youthful population.

Speaking of outdoor recreation, the islands of Hawaii took second place and Wyoming was third in the poll that rated such variables as mental, physical and economic health.

But fun outdoors obviously wasn't the only criteria — "wild, wonderful" West Virginia was ranked last among the states.

And the bluegrass state of Kentucky was 49th, with Mississippi 48th on the list.

Well isn't that special?
Outdoor recreation....pssshhhhhhhhh.....the real factor is I live here and that makes people happy.

Who knew that a state that makes it hard to get a cocktail could be so full of happy people!

I joke....but really, it is a great place to live.
I love it here.

We got a real kick out of the privacy screen on the bar so people are not forced to see those evil libations being poured :D That made us laugh outloud when it was explained. Gotta love the if you want to drink you must order something to eat rule too. That makes the servers happy.

That's the way it was in Ontario when I was growing up. The food had to cost a certain percentage of the drinks, too. Now we have pubs and bars and all that wickedness.

yes, there is some weirdness here.....
You can go to a club or tavern and get a drink without food....but you just have to order food at a restaurant with a liquor license.

The proposed legislation this year is to push the privacy screen on step further and make it a WALL that completely separates the bar from the restaurant. I just hope there is someone SENSIBLE on the committee that will kill it. It would cost a fortune for the restaurants and I personally think it would give a lot of franchises pause before branching in to Utah....not something we really want to be doing given the current economic climate.

doncha just love those folks who see it as their duty to make sure nothing that offends their sensibilities offends anyone else rather than readjusting their views?

Hawaii is definitely a happy place... didn't have any arguments with anyone while out there :D
(Except maybe the people that told me to "sit down" at the concert :( )

Hawaii is happiest because of buds, babes, and waves...simple 'nuf

Utah is happy because they live in some of the most beautiful lands of our country
..that, and so many of the Mormons up there are just in their own little world of delusional bliss.

Either way, I'll still ski there

Some of Utah's quirky liquor laws are ending, no more Zion Curtain, no more private club memberships! The separate room to mix drinks in will only apply to new eateries.

One of the reasons Utah is so happy is that it has the highest, per capita, usage rates for anti-depressants! I was over at a friend's house one night, as she was making dinner. We were drinking wine, adding a little red wine to the sauce and a little to us, when her neighbor dropped by. The neighbor is the wife of the bishop. She saw we were drinking an made a comment that we really ought to give drinking and start taking Prozac. She was convinced that it was great, her entire family was on it. Frankly, I would rather have the fun of drinking wine with my dinner.

Utah is strange and during the legislative session it gets to be down right weird but I'm sticking around just to drive the Mormons crazy! :P
