Don't just tough it out.....

....especially if you live in the Boston area....

Many of you saw the thread I posted about Elizabeth, a young mother who spent weeks on life support in ICU and is slowly getting better.

Well, one of my sister's dearest friends in suburban Boston had a different outcome...  She felt sick over the weekend with a chest cold but toughed it out until Monday. Except by Monday evening she was critically ill and by Tuesday she was dead, leaving her husband and a young son.

There's a very bad strain of pneumonia around this winter. Please don't tough it out. Go to the doctor.

Ohhhhh, Jen . . . .

Wise words to those of us who sometimes don't listen to our bodies' signals of something being "not quite right". Please convey my sympathies to your sister. :(

Thanks Cate. I will.

Mr. SGH balked at going to the doctor in January, saying I was overreacting to his cold. I pitched a fit; he went, probably more to shut me up than anything else... Yeahhhh.... He had pneumonia, and what might have happened if he'd waited..... *shudder*... I think he now sees the point.... :(

One of my co-workers caught that flu, he couldn't even think of coming to work for 2 weeks and he STILL can't really talk. Awful

You all are talking about the flu shots... what about the parents who are refusing to have their young childern vaccinated? Reported yesterday in Pittsburgh.

Good luck to your friends!!!

Three Measles Cases Reported Locally PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―

Three local cases of the measles have been reported and now health officials are warning parents to get their children vaccinated.

The recent cases involve two preschool children from Westmoreland County and their 33-year-old father.

They were seen at Children's Hospital over the weekend.

"It's very rare for us to see this disease. When it does occur, it's often in children who have not been vaccinated," says Dr. Marian Michaels of UPMC Children's Hospital.

Health officials say the children who had the measles were not vaccinated and the father received only one dose of the vaccine as a child.

"When we see that, we worry that it actually is the tip of the iceberg and there might be other family members that or other friends or other people that they could have been in contact and incubating the virus," explains Michaels.

The virus can be transmitted by direct contact or it can be airborne.

Measles is an acute highly-contagious respiratory infection. It causes a total body skin rash and flu-like symptoms, including fever, cough and a runny nose.

"So what we're doing is we're working with the Allegheny County Health Department and health care facilities to identify people who may have been exposed to these case patients while they were infectious," Dr. Jim Lando, from the Pennsylvania Health Department, said.

I'm so sorry Jen. :(

I know my cold turned into bronchitis in a matter of 3 days back in Feb.

Hubby's been fighting a wicked cough and sore throat for a few weeks. Finally went to the Dr. today and I was surprised it wasn't pneumonia. Just a very bad sinus infection. He's been a super sick puppy.

Oh dear

Bad colds used to be a common occurrence for me before I did the allergy shot thing several years back.

My next door neighbor got what she thought was a cold back when I (and her son) were in Junior High. It was the flu and by the time she got to the hospital, it was too late and she died.

Much sympathy to your sister and to her friend's family....

I'm sorry to hear this. I can't rememebr the last time I had Bronchittis then this year I had a cold I just couldnt shake, it seemed to keep coming back. So after a miserable experience on a business trip I finally dragged myself to the doctor and low and behold. I had walking pneumonia. Luckily I must have caught it before it got a good foothold. After two weeks of antibiotics some time off from work and using a rescue inhailer to losen things up it is finally gone. Listen to your bodies!!

I've had a bad cold for ten days. Yesterday I coughed so hard I thought I was gonna pass out. But I took some cough medicine (gauifesin and hydrocodone) and slept through the night for the first time in a week, and I feel much better today. I had no fever, don't you have a fever with pneumonia ?

Not always, no. And it's usually not a high fever with pneumonia anyway. I've had pneumonia three times and bronchitis more times than I can count with little or no fever. :-?

Coughing that hard isn't good. I've coughed so hard that I've broken a rib - go to the doctor please.

I like the lightheaded feeling you get with a fever.. it's cheaper than drinking.
