Reminds us of the Freddy and the Fishsticks show in May, 2008. Wondering who the backup band is?

I absolutely love her singing. She has done better covers of Jimmy songs than JB himself can do. Sure wish she would book a show or two out here in West LA.

And that photo of her posted has me drooling.

You will love her show. We saw her New Years Eve at Lulu's in Gulf Shores, Alabama. She performed with the Juke Joint Duo and others. We ended up dancing with Nadirah and Lulu before the night was over. Her voice is so sweet! Enjoy the show!

I am happy to report that I've been fortunate enough to go to quite a few Nadirah shows, including last weekend with A1A in Atlanta, and two earlier this year with the Boat Drunks. As we all know, Nadirah has an AMAZING voice when she sings with Jimmy and the CRB, as well as Club Trini.

But when you get Nadirah for a whole show?? WOW! Just WOW! :D :D Yes, that girl can definitely sing! But to see her dance, and sing her stories with every bit of her being, is a very spiritual thing... a very captivating thing! Her performance grabs hold of you and takes you on a magnificent journey, leaving you with a glowing heart and a shining smile!

If you will be in town for Jazz Fest, DO NOT miss this opportunity.

If you hadn't planned on being in town but it is do-able for you, seize this opportunity.

She is playing with 'her' band, Outside Art. They joined Nadirah both times I saw her in Vegas, and there is mind-blowing comfort and energy between all of them, and incredible stage presence. I hope that they will perform some of Nadirah's previously released songs in addition to her Nod to the Storyteller collection. But mostly, I hope many of you will experience the joy of her show.

Speckled through this site are some of my recaps of her shows, should you feel so inclined.

Peace! :D :D

Saturday night, while listening to the Tampa concert on RM, we heard Nadirah comment from the stage about this upcoming show. She mentioned that Sonny Landreth would be sitting in with her band for the Margaritaville NOLA show. As soon as we heard that, we went online and purchased our tickets. We wouldn't want to miss the two of them together. We were able to get a room at the Holiday Inn Superdome for $120 during Jazz Fest Weekend. I can live with that. See you there!

We were wondering if it was true the that Nadirah's band "Outside Art" was also the same band that backs up Sonny Landreth. Seems I heard that recently in an interview on Radio Margaritaville. Can anyone confirm that? Just curious since they are performing together at M'ville NOLA May 2nd.

They are two different bands... Outside Art is Nadirah's band, who she's played with at her previous 2 Vegas Margaritaville shows, among others.

"Nod to the Storyteller was recorded using three different bands, one of which is lead by acclaimed slide guitarist Sonny Landreth. The producer, Mac McAnally a recent inductee into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame contributed two songs to the project and Grammy Award winning songwriter/percussionist Ralph MacDonald contributed “Creola”, a collaboration with Buffett about family life on the Louisiana Bayou."

The other 2 were her band Outside Art, and of course the members of the Coral Reefer Band.

From her MTP page:

"OUTSIDE ART" is: Nadirah Shakoor-Lead Vocals, Rasheed Shakoor - Drums, Al "Grip" Smith -Keyboards/Musical Director, Reggie Ward - Guitar, Josh - Bass/vocals, Manny Martinez & Olmeca Washington - Percussion

Wow, we are back from NOLA after a wonderful evening at Margaritaville with Nadirah and Sonny! There was a great crowd, probably around 100 guests, just the right size for the room. We want to thank Jamie the bartender and Steve for all their hospitality. Jamie deserves employee of the month after that marathon behind the bar. Nice job!
We met several Parrotheads from the New Orleans chapter, plus many other fans of Nadirah. Everyone had a great time! Sorry Tiki Bar, we didn't have more time to chat. Things were moving pretty fast that night.
Nadirah performed pretty much everything from her "Nod to the Storyteller" CD. Every song was well rehearsed and tight. It was hard for me not to jump up on stage when she requested a drummer for her encore. That would have been a thrill. Thankfully Rasheed returned to save the day.
The bonus of the evening was Sonny Landreth. He performed "Let it Fly" in a duet with Nadirah plus they performed "Blue Tarp Blues" for the New Orleans crowd.
Thanks to Nadirah, Sonny and Outside Art for making our evening wonderful. Now we need to recover from the rest of the night spent on Bourbon Street

Nice recap catsway, and I’m sorry too. I was on a fly-by to the bathroom when I saw you at intermission, and then I didn’t see you again afterward. It’s always a pleasure to see your smiling face. It would have been too cool if you could have jumped up there on the drums for a bit! By the way, what does catsway mean? When the cat’s away, the mice will play… I always think it means that you play on BN when the cat is away?? :D   I guess like many of us!

It was a great night for all of us in attendance, and I hope it did well to benefit the New Orleans charities, New Orleans Artists Against Hunger and Homelessness http://www.noaahh.org/index.html , and BORN - Better Opportunities Right Now http://www.betteropportunitiesrightnow.org/ .

Cindi (balcony girls) and I had a wonderful evening as well! I found myself enjoying it too much to take any pictures. It was the first Nadirah show for the people who were by us in the crowd, and it was fun listening to their reactions as they were blown away, time and again. And even though it wasn’t our first time, it was fun reacting from getting blown away, time and again! I’d catch myself just shaking my head and smiling in amazement – at Nadirah’s vocals, moves, and dancing; and at Sonny on his guitars. He makes ‘em talk, I tell ya! And I also really enjoyed the talent and performances of the members of Outside Art - even though Nadirah recognized them all throughout the show and during the band intro, some of the names have escaped me.  Therefore, I'll just say I hope to see them all soon!

As catsway mentioned, they played 11 of the 14 tracks on Nod to the Storyteller, which was quite a treat, including perpetual favorite, ‘Give Henry the Receipt’! (I was a poet, and I know it!  ) We found out it was the first time Sonny played "Let it Fly" for an audience, and it was cool to see Nadirah sit and sway on a speaker, watching Sonny admirably, and singing backup vocals. And Sonny had told us before playing "Blue Tarp Blues", that Nadirah had called him on Friday to say that she and her friends and family were listening to it, while driving in the 9th Ward.

Nadirah also mixed some surprises into the setlist... she closed the first set with "At Last", dedicated to her mom, in the audience, and her dad, who has passed. WOW! Just wow! The second set began and ended with a catchy little tune seemingly called “All We Need is a Drummer”! That was improvised as a fun way to call her twice MIA brother Rasheed to the stage! Also during the second set, she sang a phenomenal version of "Who's Loving You", her ever-powerful "Just a Breath Away" from her 2005 release "Obsessed With Peace, Vol. I" , available at http://cdbaby.com/cd/nadirah2 , and when called to the stage for an encore, she sang a song about Freedom while waiting for her brother, and then they finished up with a rockin' "Can't Get Next to You"! Great energy, great show! :D I'm so glad we re-booked this trip when we found out she was playing!!

Nadirah had a nice group of family and friends at the show, and it was a pleasure getting to talk a little bit to some of them. Cindi almost left Margaritaville wearing Nadirah's mom's sandals  , but that's a story for another day!

I said it before, and I'll say it again... if you have the opportunity to see a Nadirah show? Go! You will be glad you did!! :D :D

Ditto! Thank you Tiki for a great review. It was an awesome evening. We can't wait to see the whole band in Las Vegas in October!

We did get a few pics posted in the Coral Reefer Performances of the multimedia area.....http://www.buffettnews.com/gallery/thum ... ?album=125

BTW, "catsway" is short for Cathi and Wayne. We always have wanted to name a sail boat with that name. Maybe someday... :)

I know, right? It will be hard to resist!

And always trying to give credit where credit is due, I'm pretty sure these were the members of Outside Art that we got to enjoy Saturday night:

Rasheed Shakoor - driving the beat on drums (when not busy eating cheesecake... little brothers!  :D )
Josh Williams - laying down the groove on bass
Al "Grip" Smith - filling in the melodies on the keyboards and guitar
Olmeca Washington - moving us with the rhythm of her congas
Rahkell Yalrah - backing up an angelic voice, with her angelic voice

Thinking of all of them, including Nadirah and Sonny... one prominent common characteristic, aside from the great music, is their warm, generous, beautiful smiles! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
