Jimmy interview on RM today

Post by Carolinadreamin' »

Did anyone hear the interview on RM at about 3:00 PM today? It kept cutting off on my computer and I only caught little pieces of it. I heard him mention Charleston, SC and was wondering what was he talking about. :D

We're leaving for Charleston on Friday so if he wants to meet for lunch......I'm available.... 8)

Sounded like he'll be debuting a few new songs during the shows this year, then putting an album out after the tour?

Jimmy said they're rehersing in Charleston this year, and that there's gonna be a bunch of new songs for the tour.

There will be a new album at the end of the tour, with the new songs and some from quite awhile ago.

And, quite a few surprises are coming up this year! WOOO HOOO!!!

How is this for a transcript?

Lots of good info today!

Thanks again, Jimmy! Getting really excited now!!!
:D :D :D :D

Steve:
It's one of those special moments on Radiomargaritaville, cuz Jimmy Buffett is on the road and on the air. Hello Jimmy, welcome back to your radio station!

Jimmy:
Well, hello Steve, and how are you and hello everybody listening. I'm thinking it's been awhile since we spoke, I think I was on the west coast doing this last time we spoke.

Steve:
That was one time and flying down the east coast was another good time. I delighted in your description of looking for ponies on the beach, and that description is also online as well. That's a pretty cool thing.

Jimmy:
Well, yeah [??] There's so many wild horses there out there on the eastern seaboard. I was just down at Fernandina Beach in the northen most city of Florida. Went down there for a couple of days of ahh... to get off the grid and before we head back, which I'm doing today, going into rehersals in Charleston. So we're here for a little while rehersing, then getting ready to go, so I'm excited and we got a lotta new stuff this year, but I'm not gonna give it away yet. But, ahh... I'd buy a ticket to this show.

Steve:
Alright! There's the endorsement right there. That's great! It is a re-invigorating time of the year, a spring-time and with it a new Buffett tour, so you're well matched with the calendar, and of course the baseball season, it's spring!

Jimmy:
Well it is, but hell, it's cold out there today! So, I'm driving up 95, I just came through Savannah and going to beautiful Walterboro South Carolina, then cut over to 17, and get up into Charleston, one of our favorite hangouts. When we open on the east coast, that's kind of where we start. We haven't actually been here rehersing in awhile, cuz the last few years we were starting out west, and we go to Austin, one of our other spots, so it will be fun to be back to do our work in one of the favorite places we like to hang out while we're working.

Steve:
Yeah, it is a wonderful city, a charming city, home of the second ever Margaritaville store, and good people, as you know.

Jimmy:
Oh yeah.

Steve:
A good place to spend some time, and give my regards to Charleston, both the city and the guy that you work with.

Jimmy:
Cool!

Steve:
Yeah! Anybody that wants to picture Jimmy Buffett in this vehicle, it's easily done, go to margaritaville.com and ya look for the journals, the Outer Banks diaries, click on the icon for Jimmy Buffett, the sign-post springs up and then there's the Journals as the sub-heading, and you'll see four big additions of pictures and words from your travels on this very coast.

Jimmy:
Well yeah, I've actually got another set of 'em coming out from the Hawaii trip so, I've got two of 'em done, and I'm gon-kinda send 'em in to Coleman, and we'll get 'em fired up. We're using some new little, I hope, cool things, new additions to even that, using some Google Earth techniques from our friends at Google, and so the western journals will be out pretty soon, and then we'll see what happens. I'm sure there will be something to write about on this tour coming up.

Steve:
Ya think? There probably will be, and as you say, if it's a little cool then part of your job is to bring the summer to the folks. This first leg is really gonna be a good one, including Atlanta and Dallas, a couple of North Carolina locations, and I promise you will have it warm for ya by April 25th in Tampa, Florida as well. So what a great little leg coming up.

Jimmy:
Yeah, well I'm really excited about it. And plus, we've got... You know what I've done this year, is I've actually written quite a few new songs over the winter, with the simple, and kind of, you know, as always counter to the way I think other people think. I wrote 'em for the road and for the people in the audience, instead of trying to get on the radio or trying to make an album. So then when I finished 'em up, and played 'em for people they said, Jesus! This is good stuff! You ought to make an album! So I think what we're gonna do is, throughout the summer we'll debut and introduce the whole selection of new songs, which we'll play live. And then at the end of the tour, ahh... we've already kinda started on the studio album, so we'll have live stuff and studio stuff, and it covers everything from songs that I started writing back when I went to Africa, to Timbuktu, two years ago, right up to the present. So we're covering everything from the festivals in the desert in Timbuktu to the recession to the optimistic outlook on the other side.

Steve:
Yep! No shortage of inspiration when you're Jimmy Buffett, looking for things to write about.

Jimmy:
Well yeah, I think there's a pretty good indication of where we're going. When we went down to Key West, and I kinda debuted We Got a Lot To Drink About, and then Surfin' In A Hurricane kinda popped up over in Hawaii, so those are two of six that I've written that we'll be kind of debuting as the summer goes along, and then I got a couple more after that. So, it's kind of different and exciting for me to kinda write new songs for a tour.

Steve:
Yeah.

Jimmy:
I haven't done that in a long time, like since I wrote, on assignment for when we did Don't Stop The Carnival, so it's a little different, but [???] and I think the songs are good and I know that the challenge is that to write songs that, when you're introducing new material to people at a show, they better be able to get it real quick, and that was my goal and I think I did it, but we'll find out real quick!

Steve:
I think it's a real great model, ya know, and it certainly makes the Summerzcool '09 Tour even more special than it otherwise would be. Ya know?

Jimmy:
Well I hope so!

Steve:
Yeah! I can think of a few other artists that are not shy about ahhh... puttin' out new... Ya know the Grateful Dead were always that way. New material? Yeah! Just play it! Ya know? And, the audience will get it when they get it, and they'll catch up, ya know?

Jimmy:
Well, I think that what it is, [???] is ya know I've been doing this for so long enough, I know how to craft, I know how to insert it in there in the right places, but the trick is to write the songs that people can immediately identify with, and at the same time feel that they're in the comfort zone of what they've liked for 40 years. So, that's kinda my mission here and I took most of the winter down on the islands and worked on it in my little studio down there. So, I'm happy to be coming back, and we're going into rehersal this afternoon, and a few other little surprises that we'll try to keep under the hat, and even all the way through.

Steve:
Hmmm hmmm hmmm!

Jimmy:
So, that's where I'm headed, and we'll see everybody up this road, Highway 95 and Highway 17 through the Carolinas... We'll be around here for awhile.

Steve:
Alright Jimmy, we're all very excited about the new Summerzcool Tour, how it's gonna sound, how it's gonna look. So, have a great set of rehersals, and good luck, and we'll have fun bringing it out to the folks, on Radiomargaritaville.

Jimmy:
Alright Steve! And I guess I'll see ya down there in Tampa on the 25th.

Steve:
If not sooner, and lookin' forward to it.

Jimmy:
OK!

Steve:
Alright Jimmy, thanks for taking the time with us, thank you!

Jimmy:
OK, take care, bye bye!

Steve:
You too! Bye!
Hey Snake, we need more wine!
