One of those songs that sticks with you, was in my head all the way home after the show

It definitely is an earworm, but it reminds me of when I was a kid and that makes me smile.

When I first saw the title of this thead (and hadn't peeked at any set lists), I thought "why on Earth does someone want to talk about one specific Beatles song"? Then, of course, I quickly figured out that Jimmy had added it to the set list. My immediate reaction was to make a face something like this: .

I promised myself I'd wait to hear it in person before forming an opinion. Like SGH, I thought maybe it just didn't "translate" well from RM.
Wrong! It STUNK!! EWWW!!! ICK!!! The band looked like they were only playing it b/c Jimmy made them do it. The crowd didn't seem terribly "into" it.

I think the only reason he's leaving it in the set list at this point is b/c he has that great big beautiful video backdrop, and if he didn't play it, there would be no song to "match" the Beatles cover art. Thank HEAVEN he came back and played "He Went to Paris!" I hate to say it, but I really would have been ticked off if the last song of the whole show had been Yellow Submarine.

I sure hate to come out so definitely negative on something, I truly do. But it really stunk.

For the past 3 tours he has chosen a song that we all dislike to play during the encore. Glory Days, Rainy Day Woman, and now Yellow Submarine.

Do you think he might be doing this just to mess with his fans?? I mean, why else would he 3 years he play a poor cover during the encore?

My general feeling regarding encores is that they should be covers. I like to go on the assumption that the band, any band, played everything they wanted to play in the main set and come out for an encore just because they want to play a little more...so they play a cover that they really like. I hate it when a band or performer saves the most popular song for the encore. When Jimmy played M'ville in the encore, did we really believe he wouldn't play it unless we all stood, cheered and flicked our bics?

But in Jimmy's case it is different, he has such a selection of songs he recorded (covers or not) that he could pick out one more gem.

But if you look at the last 3 songs he's put in that spot - Glory Days, Rainy Day Women and now Yellow Submarine, thay are all sing-along songs that almost everybody in the crowd knows the words to. He obviously wants to get the crowd up one more time, and short of saving Margaritaville, Fins or Cheeseburger for the encore, he is left with picking a cover. Are there other Buffett songs, or even covers, that I'd rather hear? Absolutely! But if he wants to get the audience up and singing along one more time, I don't think My Lovely Lady will cut it. So he saves those for his final accoustic encore.

While I am not a huge Yellow Submarine fan, I have to say I love his rendition of Rhumba Man. Sometimes the covers work really well!

I totally disagree, the song was fun, refreshing and a great way to give you one more jolt before the show ended. Jimmy did a fantastic job on it and the whole set list finally rocks. What an incredible mix of hits, new and covers. Glad he left get drunk and screw out.

It's agreed then - JB should stop doing covers (yes, that means no more BEG fortunately) and start doing originals.

I feel totally validated.

I loved it and I loved the Bob Dylan cover last year. I think it's like a wild card...you never know what to expect...and yellow submarine was definitly unexpected...I am a Beatles fan and haven't even thought about that song since my Dad rented the movie when I was a kid. I like the idea of him doing a lesser known song of his own...there are a ton of songs that i would love to hear in concert, but I have given up hope of ever hearing them....HANG OUT GANG, GOD DON'T OWN A CAR.....lol!

I still prefer a Buffett song but I have to admit it sounded better last night than the previous nights.

when I listened to it on RM it sounded like they were having fun doing it.....when I saw them do in Tampa....I was having fun when they were doing it. I thought it was a fun song to do, and everybody in my row was dancing and singing...probably because it's a fun song being done by a fun band....and everybody there just wants to have fun. I do believe it is more fun when you are there as it doesn't translate quite as well when listening from your home, or car.

Would I rather have seen Migration in Charlotte and Raleigh, certainly! However, although I'm not a Beatles fan, I didn't mind Yellow Submarine. It's a simple cover, that everyone knows and from my vantage point, the band was into it (especially Utley in Charlotte). Definitely liked it better than Glory Days, and even Brian Wilson's In My Room, which was too mellow.
I'm really glad that he pulled out Rhumba Man this year as well.

I agree, it did get the crowd going. I think it was not for the RM crowd. I was surprised and the people sitting behind us were incredulous (What is that? [referencing the graphic] Is that?? That can't be? It sounds like the Beatles...) We finally clued them in just to shut them up. I think he explained how it came to be in one of the interviews. They used it as a warm up song in the studio, they all had fun with it and he decided to throw it in the set this year. Says he has gotten used to doing an off beat cover each year now. I do have a memory problem and I could be seriously mistaken.

I think I've figured this out. As Jimmy ages he thinks he's more like a father figure to PHs (grandfather to some) and plugs in songs which are easy sing alongs, as in, "Okay kids let's sing Yellow Submarine." And then off to bed. Rumor has it that next year he's gonna do Row, Row, Row Your Boat.
