Re: Kentucky Derby hats
Do you already have a nice hat ? You could do a tropical-flower thing if it's kind of a formal party..... or if it's not, go all out with a silly tropical theme or go to a discount store and get little plastic horseys with little plastic fence and trees in the toy section. Make them race around your hat. I wish I looked good in hats. I tell people I don't look good in hats and they say, oh I bet you do. Then I put on a hat and their horror never fails to entertain me.

I guess we do need to know if they need to be more formal or if anything (within reason) goes.

Re: Kentucky Derby hats
Okay. we can DO this. We CAN mix Parrothead with Kentucky Derby.
Here's what I'm thinkin'...
around the brim of the hat, use some brown astroturf (or construction paper?) to be like the racetrack. But you're a Parrothead and proudofitdammit, so instead of horses, put some plastic sharks around the "racecourse" instead of horses. You can probably get them at Ben Franklin or Michaels or someplace like that. Look in the cake decorating aisle for some figurines that can be the jockeys. SpongeBob characters might work well. Not parrotheady or Derby-ish, but I like them and I'm on a roll here so work with me. Remember to put numbers on the racesharks. The "crown" part of the hat can be the "bleachers" where the crowd sits. Take some tailgating photos from Buffett shows and cut the people out and affix them to the top of the hat so that they look like they're cheering on the race-sharks.
Drink liberally, and it MIGHT look like a Kentucky Derby hat!![battingeyes [smilie=battingeyes.gif]](./images/smilies/battingeyes.gif)

Re: Kentucky Derby hats
How about seahorses racing around a track, being chased by a shark. If you're really creative, buy little motorcycles or horses and take the riders off and put them on the seahorses.
Around the crown of the hat, put a few palm trees and shells to give it the tropical feel

don't wear one, and just say it's invisible.
besides if you do wear one, you might be mistaken for a mushroom.

Charlie...that's just mean! But dang funny! Do we need to start calling Renee "Shroom"?AlbatrossFlyer wrote:don't wear one, and just say it's invisible.

Instead of sharks or seahorses (or in addition to), you could use flamingos....

Re: Kentucky Derby hats
My Kentucky Derby hat is going to be a big floppy blue straw hat (from wal-mart
), and I sent it off with my mom for some decoratin'.
I asked for flowers or ribbon around the brim, but she is a bit flamboyant and creative when it comes to these things, so who knows what it will come back looking like. I just told her it has to fit in my carry-on bag for the flight to the derby.
I am going for the 'hat with flowers that keeps the sun off my neck' look as opposed to a hat that makes me look like I am at a halloween party. It's our first trip, so I am trying to not get overly out of control on the outfit, I'd rather get out of control on the infield!!!!!
