5/02/2009 quit date- Any advice?

I've talked about it since the beginning of March when I was hospitalized and now I've decided on my date to stop smoking. May 2, 2009. I'm going after work tomorrow to get my patches.
I'm quitting for several reasons however the 2 primary reasons are my health and the cost. Don came home tonight from running to get his smokes and told me that his brand is now $ 8.50 a pack and mine are $ 7.50. This week the elevator in the parking garage was broken and walking up 5 flights of stairs to my truck was a major PITA. I also noticed the smell when I was in the hospital and smokers came to visit me (they gave me the patch when I was in the hospital so I know it will help).
I've enrolled in just about everything Nicoderm has to offer however you can't have too much help quiting smoking. I was wondering if any of the reformed smokers have words of wisdom they would share?

Quitting is for Quitters. Do not let Big Brother get a hold of you. If you enjoy it keep doing it. Find another brand when they offer buy one get one frees. Do not let man get you down.

I tried cold turkey several times. It didn't help. Don has had his patches for months, just never got around to using them.
Thanks for the hugs - I LOVE your hugs!!!

Tell everyone you know to not talk about it. The last thing I wanted to hear was an innocent comment like "How's the quiting smoking going?" Nothing made me want a smoke more than that.

First, congratulations ph4ever. I know it wont be an easy road, but it will be a fulfilling one. Based on mistakes I see my friends make: Don't beat yourself up fr the occasional slip up.. keep the eye on the prize!
I am going to send this link to a fellow Bn'r to see if they want to out themselves and post some advice.
FINZ UP!!!!

The cost was the icing on the cake. I've been wanting to quit since the end of Feb. This was just the incentive to get me going.

Thanks so much for the advice!!! Makes a lot of sense. I'm not even going to tell my employees that I've started wearing the patch. I know they'll be supportive but some will probably ask on a daily basis.

And they mean well, so its tough to get mad at them. I was having a bad quit day once and my buddy came along and asked about it. Almost punched him in the face.

I'm like Wayne's dad--after 25 years I quit cold turkey on january 1st of this year and haven't looked back.
One of the things I did was to confront the situations where I would be most likely to smoke, namely while drinking, and challenge myself, so about ten days into it, I went to the corner bar and just sat there and got plowed, and every time I wanted a cigarette, I would just choose not to go out and have one. When I woke up the next day and hadn't smoked, I knew I could beat it for good.
I still get cravings all the time, but they are more for the habit of it--while playing cards, golfing, wanting to kill some dumb staff member or customer--and not for the physical need itself. And the craving passes in about five seconds. It's like it shows up just long enough for me to acknowledge it, let me know it's still there, and then goes away.
Another thing that helps is the mindset and how you think of yourself. Part of the reason I can let the cravings go is because i simply tell myself: "Now, why would I want a cigarette? I don't smoke."
Good luck, and bend my ear anytime you need advice, support or just someone to vent to because you can't figure out how you're gonna handle all the assholes in your life now that you're not smoking.

See? It's assholes like this gem of humanity that are gonna make you want to have a cigarette and calm down instead of telling them what a f**** douchebag you think they are.

I quit cold turkey, and carried my smokes with me for a few days after I quit. I had decided before I set my date that I wasn't going to hide from them, go thru the pain of quitting and then go back to them the first chance I got a few days later. It was hard for about 4 days but then I gave the smokes and all my lighters away and haven't looked back. I quit the Monday before Thanksgiving....157 days ago
The biggest thing is being mentally ready to quit. If you set your mind you want to quit, then you can do it. Good Luck!!!

(((((Connie))))) Don't have much advice, but hugs I can deliver.
When my mom quit cold turkey (she'd been in ICU for a week, having nearly died from smoking) she took up knitting to have something to do with her hands.
All the above advice sounds great, after having watched both Mom and Dad struggle through quitting (and ultimately be successful).
