"It ain't his goodest one."
Back about a million years ago (around 1983 or so), when I was in junior high school, I noticed that one of my friends had a Hank Williams Jr. tape that I'd never seen before, "Man of Steel". I asked him if that was Hank's new album, and he replied, "Yeah, but it ain't his goodest one."
Well, I just got Jimmy's 1999 CD "Beach House on the Moon" yesterday, and I can say the same thing about it -- "it ain't his goodest one".
I've only given it one listen-through so far, so this is something of a provisional judgement, but right now I'd rate "BHOTM" far below JB's 1990s best ("Fruitcakes", "Barometer Soup", "Banana Wind") and quite a ways behind 2006's "Take the Weather With You" (which I'm liking more and more), too. It's not a bad record, but so far it's just not that great.
Perhaps it'll grow on me, but hey, even if it doesn't, everyone tosses out a clunker from time to time, right?

I wouldn't go as far as calling BHOTM a "clunker",
but I definitely agree it "ain't his goodest one"
If I were to try to rank Jimmy's studio albums from my most favorite to least favorite,
Beach House would be toward the bottom.

Second that...I never really liked it either until it played unintentionally on my Itunes library and I said to myself "I really like this album". It is a really chill album, with nothing overly exciting about it. It is nice to listen to when your, well, chillin'.Frank4 wrote:I really like Beach House....Pacing the Cage is one of my favorite songs JB has ever recorded. I really like the title song also....

Very well said, chillin' with a cocktail is an even better way to listen to it.HD18JBGuy wrote:Second that...I never really liked it either until it played unintentionally on my Itunes library and I said to myself "I really like this album". Every few years I break out BHOTM and give it a chance to "totally redeem" itself and it has yet to happen. The CD isn't without decent songs though. This topic reminds me that I'm due to give it a chance because it's been a good 2-3 years.

Re: "It ain't his goodest one."
Just to note, I don't dislike this CD, and by calling it a "clunker" I mean relative to Buffett's best work, and specifically his best 90s CDs.
And I'm sure it'll grow on me some as I listen to it more and more. Haven't gotten to watch the computer video on it yet.

Re: "It ain't his goodest one."
this album rates as one of his worst for me. although there are a few good songs on it, it just seems like he and the band were a little out of gas. you can't win 'em all~!its also after this point where more cover songs begin to surface on the albums.

Re: "It ain't his goodest one."
Like all of his albums, it has winners and it songs that miss. Some albums have stronger ratios.
This album has a couple of truly great songs, but I think a lot more that either miss or fall into the forgettable range.

By definition there can only be one 'goodest' so he has put out 35+ 'not goodest'.

Re: "It ain't his goodest one."
May not be his "goodest" but it was the first CD I bought after I became a Parrothead! I already had SYKBH and Fruitcakes that my husband had gotten free joining one of those record clubs and never really listened to them much. Then my keets came home from their Dad's singing Jimmy's songs and I went out and bought the current CD. "You Call It Jogging" could have been written by me about my first husband LOL! Personally, I like most of the songs and listen to it frequently.

Re: "It ain't his goodest one."
Its not rowdy, but very brainy and clever. It has a bit of a high class lounge sound to it.
It makes me grin and I love it. Having said that I like to stay away from it for a while,Then when I come back,Its even better.----like religion and sex---Wait!--Thats been used in a song somewhere.

Indecision may or may not be my problem
Re: "It ain't his goodest one."
Take off Math Suks and I Don't Know And I Don't Care and Lucky Stars and it's a pretty good album - better than Mango, Riddles, Weather, Coconut (maybe - it's got a couple of clunkers on it as well - The Good Fight and It's My Job).
It's certainly no CIL, A1A, Havana, SOAS...he'll never top any of his 1970s albums...
