So.......I'm contemplating starting a wedding officiant/coordinator business. In Forida as a notary you can marry peeps - I've done it once and it was too kewl I'm not sure how much more than just being the officiant that I want to undertake but after looking a few websites - for simple but elegant beach type weddings - it looks like something I could handle.

For those of you who've had a tropical/beach wedding (I know who you are ) what was the best part about it? What would you have done differently? How much did the officiant charge you?

I can't help with the questions but....

I can make customized garters. My mom and I do this for family and friends and I've tossed around making some to sell in local shops.

Kewl - what's "custom" about them? Do you have some pictures - I would love to see them I made a customized one for my wedding - the material was camo edged in lace

I also am a register bridal consultant and have done everything from sold wedding dresses to made custom make bridal veils.

I can get a few from people who have them. We usually make a keeper garter that is ivory or white. Sometimes with the color of the wedding with it. We hand bead pearls, beads, crystals etc. Sometimes we add charms from james averey- initials, school charm joined hearts.

The toss garter is usually the something blue. Not as elaborate but still more than what you get at the store.

I'm going to be working on one when I get back from tampa.

A couple of our captains are notary's and they typically charge a flat fee of around $125 to perform the ritual whether it's on the beach, a boat, a dock, or in the Publix parking lot.

We paid our UMC minister a $100 donation to the youth program he works with.

I remember hating the whole wedding planning process. I was attracted to packages that were pretty inclusive and had tiered pricing of what was included.

Make buddies with flower and cake people and make it easy for your customers.

My daughter had a beach wedding--non-tropical; it was on the beach at our cottage.
The officiant was great, and provided sample ceremonies, which the young folks then customized. She is with a group of other officiants in our large, rural county. She came out to rehearse the afternoon before, too, and brought her sister to watch, and enjoy the sunshine.

I was particularly pleased because she is also named Barb, is a couple of years my senior, is about my build and colouring, and we wore nearly-matching suits!

Mal - I've been investigating the "various" packages I could provide, i.e. (i) just marry them, they take care of everything else, (ii) marry them and do a special ceremony i.e. sand ceromony, hand binding, breaking of the glass, etc., or (iii) coordinate everything from flowers, cake, decorations, etc.

Barb - I want to be able to offer different samples as well. I already have one ready to go for a "renewal of the vows" parrothead style (anyone remember that?)
