A Letter to Jimmy Buffett
Posted by Tony & Cheri on May 11, 2009

Here’s an e-mail we sent to one of our favorite Caribbean troubadors, Jimmy Buffett. If you are not familiar with Mr. Buffett’s music or books go to the store right now and buy some of his CDs. After you listen for a while you will find yourself looking at maps and planning vacations on a tropical beach!

Dear Jimmy,

We need your help. More specifically, Mexico needs your help.

As you probably know, Mexico’s economy has taken a pretty bad beating lately with the swine flu scare. Although the flu was concentrated several thousand miles away in Mexico City, the media blitz about how dangerous it was to travel to Mexico kept people away from all of Mexico including the beautiful Caribbean coast! As a result tourists are now simply too scared to visit us even though we never had a single case of flu here where we live in Playa Del Carmen.

In a way the lack of crowds has been kind of nice for us locals since we have had the beaches and bars to ourselves for a while. But it is starting to affect folk’s lives. People are getting laid off and businesses are worried about whether they can stay open until the tourists return. From hotels to bars, fishing boats, restaurants, dive shops and more…everybody is beginning to hurt.

Thank you Snowparrot for noticing our little plea!

Truthfully we realize that tour dates and times are pretty much set in stone and the chances of a last minute trip to another country is almost ( ) impossible. But our purpose was really to let people know that the Caribbean side of Mexico has gotten caught in the media whirlwind over swine flu and could use some attention right now. The fear of traveling anywhere in Mexico, even places that haven't had any flu, has taken a toll on the local economy and a lot of small business are thinking of closing, a lot of folks are already getting laid off or losing jobs and a lot of families are worried about the future.

Back in 2007 when Hurricane Dean slammed into Mahahual, a small town on Mexico's southern Caribbean Coast, there seemed to be no one who could help. It was then that Radio Margaritaville helped some of us doing volunteer work to get the word out and the Parrotheads came through with help. We are still grateful. We know the power of the Parrotheads!!! So when this crisis hit we thought we would once again spread the word through the Coconut Telegraph that Mexico's Caribbean Shore is flu-free and still open for business.

Again, thanks for the help. And if you do find your way down to this little piece of tropical paradise on a day that Jimmy has a live concert...stop by. We always crank the Satellite Radio up full blast and party. It's like having a front row seat at the concert. :D Girls in Bikinis drink free of course.

And since this is a thread about pre-concert happenings, we will share a story of our favorite pre-concert event. We were down in New Orleans a number of years ago when Jimmy was scheduled for a Jazz Fest appearance. We got in the night before the Festival and as is our tradition whenever we get to Nawlins, our first stop that night was at the Margaritaville Cafe for a Jimmy's Perfect Margarita. The place seemed pretty crowded but we pushed our way in... only to see Jimmy Himself on Stage at the Cafe! We grabbed a waitress, ordered some drinks and settled in for two of the greatest hours of entertainment we had ever had. Just further proof that you never know where he might turn up.

Fins Up.

If I had the money, I would go back to the Riveria Maya in a heartbeat. I have volunteered (repeatedly) to go to Mexico and do a detailed investigation (of the lack of swine flu) from the beach of a lovely Mexican hotel but no one here at work was willing to finance my research. :D

Good luck and I hope business picks up as people realize this is not the "hot zone" that was once feared....... :-?

Hey Babe! Last time we saw you you were sitting on a swing under a palapa sipping a boat drink! Which is where you should be now.

All is well here in Playa Del Margaritaville. Quiet of course but beautiful. We are heading down to Zenzi's for Jez's Beach barbeque this afternoon. Wish you could join us.

No, still no word from Bubba on a Mexico mini-tour. Hope springs eternal. :D

We will be visiting our son in Southern California on the 2nd...but will be back in Playa on the 4th. Hopefully you will still be at the bar margarita in hand!

BTW...Day 13 of the "Bubba Plays Playa" Watch and still no word. We wonder if Kenny C needs a vacation in Mexico? :P

Well that figures...I'm leaving on the 4th, this is just another one of my shorty trips. I'll guess I'll be passing you in the airport! :(
