You Had to be there
Just got done playing this album after perhaps not listening to it in about 2 years, and man, what a great album. I always liked this album, but when you don't listen to it for a while and go back and play it, what show JB used to put on. the freshness of everything. The youth
. AH,to be young again.

Re: You Had to be there
I think I was there, or well maybe not there but a similar there. I'm not sure, it was then and it's hard to remember back then.
There you go.
It's always nice to go back to a old favorite after not listening to it for a long time.

Re: You Had to be there
I wasn't at either of those shows where the album was recorded .... but I did see Jimmy that same tour at King's Dominion Park outside of Richmond. VA that summer ..... performing with the cast on his leg from breaking his leg playing softball.
Ticket to the park was $6.00 with my college ID, and that included park admission, all rides AND the concert! Saw the show with my college girlfriend (who if I remember correctly ... drove us back home to Virginia Beach after the show).

I didn't see that tour at King's Dominion, but I saw Jimmy there a couple of years later.
I think at the time you could get into the show with like 6 Coca-Cola bottle caps.
Those were the days. I have a picture somwhere from one of the shows.
Jimmy was wearing "O P" courderoy shorts. The early 80's for ya!

Superb live album.
Although he overdubbed the vox on Come Monday. The rest of the album sounds live.

Re: You Had to be there
We used to listen to that album on Sunday mornings, at the video rental place I worked. We were all good and hung over from the night before, and it was perfect "recovering from the party hangover" music.
Man...it's been a *long* time since I could party like that...

Re: You Had to be there
That's about the same time I wanted to go to Summerfest (in Milwaukee WI), when Jimmy was playing there. It was pretty much the same situation as SP described — pay to get into the festival grounds (and that was under $10.00), and the concert came with the price of the ticket. And not just one concert; there were and still are several music stages at Summerfest, each with a different style of music. You don't like country? New Age is over here, hip-hop/rap over there, indie bands on the other side of the parking lot, etc.Travis McGee wrote:I didn't see that tour at King's Dominion, but I saw Jimmy there a couple of years later.

Problem was, I just didn't have a car I could depend on to get me there and back; and by the time I did he'd quit playing Summerfest and was doing his shows at Alpine Valley.

Re: You Had to be there
Summerfest was (and I suppose still is) a great few days of music and fun. I grew up in northern Wisconsin and started going in 1970 right after I got my first car. Like Bicycle Bill said, some of the best music was on the smaller side stages. Regional bands like Short Stuff and The Siegle-Schwall Band, but also some groups like Cheap Trick and REO Speedwagon that played the small stages before having any hits. Not that I like them that much, but they were actually better before they got all of the attention.
I was at Summerfest the night they arrested George Carlin on the Main Stage for doing the routine about, The 7 dirty words you can't say on TV. I was also there the night that Blood, Sweat and Tears played thier final concert. Back then, if a band did a final concert, that was it! No reunion tours the next week! At the time, it was the largest crowd to ever see a show at Summerfest. Maybe it still is. There was something like a half-a-million people there that night and they came back for seven encores! It went way past the nornal curfew time and took forever to get out of the parking lot!
By the time JB hit the music scene I had already moved to Colorado, but I saw him out here a few times just prior to the "You Had to Be There" years.
Thanks for letting me ramble on about my old memories. I guess you had to be there.
