Re: Not happy about the canceled West Coast Dates!
You're dead wrong regarding the importance of fans and what they deserve. The goodwill Jimmy shares with his fans is the only real commodity he owns. The minute he jeopardizes that- it's the beginning of the end.ScarletB wrote: People need to come to grips with the fact that we are drops in his fan base bucket and there's no reason why he HAS to do anything except give us a good performance when we buy a ticket. Anything else is something that we, as fans, decided to do on our own. People, we are not important, we are not his family, we are paying fans who he entertains, he doesn't LOVE us, we're customers. The idea that he owes us anything is ludicrous. 50-100 people out of his hundreds of thousands of fans is not even statistically significant. I know that sounds cold but it's a business not a group hug.
I am not downplaying the fact that people are disappointed, I would be too, but unless everyone gets over the thought that he personally CARES, you're going to end up unhappy. Yes, he thanks his fans at each show - we all paid to be there. And I've been close enough that you can see on his face that he really IS amazed that this is all still going on. But I'd be willing to bet once he goes offstage and has his glass of whatever, that concert is already a memory. He means what he says when he says it but it isn't the prime focus of his life, nor should it be.
Look- I own a business that services the event industry. We put up large trade shows, theme and corporate events, etc. With a large warehouse, trucks and people flying every which way trying to please clients I understand a little of the tradeoffs you have to make sometimes. But you NEVER jeopardize the respect and goodwill you have with your clients(fans). The minute you do loyalties can become frayed and soon you are history.
My clients ARE my business and I demand my employees treat them like gold- big or small- and especially in this present economic climate! If we screw up- we admit it, take the heat, apologize and make it right. And, I'm sorry- maybe I'm naive but I expect absolutely no less as fan of Jimmy Buffett.
What I see is a man looking at the "next phase" of his career- leveraging the incredible and well-deserved goodwill and fan base he's achieved so far- and marketing it to a higher level. This has it's rewards- as well as it's pitfalls. I think we're seeing some of the latter. Just my opinion.

It's been a lovely cruise.

perhaps Buffett wouldn't mind losing some of his fan base? hence, his interest in the Miami Dolphins. He is a Florida boy @ heart....Obviously, he prefers smaller venues in London and Paris than Seattle, or San Diego.
It seems evident, there are two trains of thought..personally, I think that ScarletB is much closer to what the majority of his fan base feels.

I seriously doubt he's too worried about losing any of his assets.

Re: Not happy about the canceled West Coast Dates!
London and Paris are not replacing Seattle or San Diego, if they were they'd both be in October...so I don't think it's a case of Jimmy wanting to play smaller venues (he'd dump the whole tour then) and saying F you to the west coast. The players on each side of this issue could easily be reversed if it just so happened that he were scheduled to play (oops I mean *tentatively* scheduled to play) Boston, Camden, Nissan, Raleigh, ATL...insert any other venue of your choice, during the October time frame. This is about $$ and a better opportunity for exposure. I don't think it will cost him his fan base, I'm sure there will still be the same fervor for tickets when he rolls thru this part of the woods again. As for being a Florida boy...I'm sure we could search out a few dozen threads where the Floridians have complained about being snubbed yet again.Moonie wrote:I think you've over estimated your worth to Buffett...maybe some with a much smaller fan base should worry..

Re: Not happy about the canceled West Coast Dates!
I have no doubt Jimmy cares about his fan base. Keep in mind we're fans, but we're also what is known as a particular "Niche Group" There are still a lot of people out in the world who have no idea who Jimmy Buffett is until they hear Margaritaville or Come Monday and then they remember or have heard the songs. That's about as far as their interest goes. He still has a large fan base without doubt, and he's an extremely savy business person, so don't get me wrong. However, this is one time someone hasn't done something right and eventually things and explanations will surface. The day an entertainer has no concern for his fans or assets is the day his popularity begins to tumble and can fall hard. I don't think Jimmy wants to fall hard, so I believe he does care.Moonie wrote:I think you've over estimated your worth to Buffett...maybe some with a much smaller fan base should worry..TraderRick wrote:You're dead wrong regarding the importance of fans and what they deserve. well, I don't have a horse in this race, that's for sure...and of course, I can understand the disappointment. and replace was a poor choice of words.
I do, however, think that Buffett is possibly in a transitional period in his professional life and I suspect before it's over there's going to be a lot of changes.

Re: Not happy about the canceled West Coast Dates!
As I, and others have said elsewhere, Jimmy Buffett is a bidness man FIRST.
There wil be no loss in total ticket sales anywhere for him. Far too many people are wiling to pay any price to see him. You don't want to go, fine well and good.
Someone else that has never been to a concert, will gladly take your place. They may or maynot be a parrothead. That does not mean they do not enjoy the concert(s).
The trouble is his old fans are in waiting lines and can and will be replaced by new fans. The proof is in the tickets still selling out in minutes. When such sales show a significant drop and a loss of bidness, no doubt Jimmy Buffett or his handlers may or will become concerned.
Clearly some called for a boycott. Apparently some of those have changed their minds (or sig lines anyway).
Again I ask, how many people spent money for airlines and hotels rooms were actually effected and lost money? I seriously doubt that there were enough people, for the few canceled shows are enough to make any significant effect.
Jimmy Buffett's bidness comes first and formost to him. As it should to any good bidness owner that wants to mantain a profitable bidness.
I have witnessed Jimmy Buffett say numerous times he "would see us next year" and not return to the venue. Is that him making promises he cannot keep or lying to us?
Yep that hurts as well. I don't see anyone attacking him for such.
Anyone else remember Jimmy Buffett telling parrotheads that they "needed to get a life."?
Jimmy has his own life, family and bidness that (I am sure) he is more concerned with than this.

well, I don't have a horse in this race, that's for sure...and of course, I can understand the disappointment. and replace was a poor choice of words.
I do, however, think that Buffett is possibly in a transitional period in his professional life and I suspect before it's over there's going to be a lot of changes.
God Forbid politics...although it appears Ahhhnald and Ca. are in for a very bumpy ride.
As for Ahhhnald....he could use a good kick in the head, IMHO. Maybe Jimmy could do it for me.

Ooooohhhhh....politics.....
Yes, we have Arnold, my main governator. you have to like a place that elects actors over politicians.
Not sure what kind of ride we have in front of us, but the ride from the boat is quite nice, the view from my home still features the Pacific and Catalina Island, and whether Jimmy visits or not, hey, other than Hawaii where we vacation, life could not be better in California on our worst day compared to St. Somehwere.
Come visit whether Jimmy does or not, we love all people out west. Screw volcanoes, we have our earth shaking events, fires, mudslides, and let's face it, a fair number of insanely beautiful women.
Jimmy, see you soon young man. The Irvine show was fun!

YA KNOW,
I read somewhere that the Holy Roman Empire was neither holy, Roman, or an empire.
I'm going to have to do some further research on that one and report back.
Stay tuned.

My 1st Jimmy concert was in 1982 when he came to the Paramont in Seattle......he used to come every year or 2.
I will miss him.
