"Incommunicado"
This has quickly become my favorite "new" Buffett song, partly because it is such a fine tune but largely too because of the John Wayne verse. Being a huge John Wayne fan myself (I was 11 when the news flash came on TV that he'd died), this verse and this song touched me deeply.
Heck, the whole "Coconut Telegraph" album is great.
Anyone else think "Incommunicado" is a primo tune?

I agree....SYKBH is what pulls everyone in, but if you stick around long enough, you realize the real gems are songs like this.
Re: "Incommunicado"
Incommunicado is awesome, along with the entire album. CT has a great mix of slow stuff that my wife loves (Stars Fell on Alabama) and fast stuff to listen to with the top down (The Weather is Here...).

We actually went to Cedar Key once just so I could say I went there. A nice little sea-side village at the time with just a few shops and restaurants.
Re: "Incommunicado"
Great song on a pretty good album. It's one of Jimmy's better songs, or even best. It certainly feels like some kind of an era song, that it only could have been written and recorded when it was. It's still in the same vein as the previous 3 albums - CIL and SOAS more so than Volcano - it could have fit on CILCIA easily.
That's what's so funny to me about Coconut Telegraph - it's the last album that has that Jimmy Buffett sound that he started perfecting with Havana Daydreamin' and peaked with CILCIA and SOAS. After CT it went away. It wasn't until Fruitcakes/Barometer Soup/Banana Wind that he actually sustained a certain vibe/sound (it's also on DSTC, especially Island Fever). Probably has a lot to do with the band staying the same...or at least a core unit.

Re: "Incommunicado"
Some of my favorite Colorado memories involve Jimmy's tunes at special points. I love listened to Incommunicado when road biking up Independence Pass. Probably not the same Mexican restaurant, but I've eaten at a couple in Leadville. Gypies in the Palace is fun as well when I bike by Jimmy's old place in Old Snowmass. Growing Older But Not Up was often on before I played in the beer league softball team in Aspen...the same one Jimmy used to play in. When the Coast is Clear and I Have Found Me A Home resonated when I lived in Aspen as well.
I love Jimmy because he's a great ballad writer. I love anything that he and Matt Betton have written together. Anyone know anything about Matt? Can't find anything on the web?
Peace,
Matt

What's with the line "Travis Mcgee's still in Cedar Key"?
I've only read "The Deep Blue Goodbye" and have always wondered did Travis end up there for a while or something?

The story is that John MacDonald stayed at the Island Hotel in Cedar Key and used Cedar Key as the setting for some of his books, so I guess Travis McGee was there.sonofabeach wrote:What's with the line "Travis Mcgee's still in Cedar Key"?

During World War II the hotel became run-down and unlivable. In 1946 Bessie and Loyal Gibbs bought the building and set out to revitalize it. They restored the place and renamed it the "Island Hotel". During their ownership, the hotel and bar became a notable hangout for local characters and celebrities alike. These included Pearl Buck, Vaughan Monroe, Tennessee Erie Ford, Francis Langford, Myrna Loy, Richard Boone and John MacDonald.
Hurricane Easy lambasted Cedar Key in 1950, blowing the roof off the hotel. Major remodeling was required to make the building usable again. Loyal Gibbs died in 1962. Bessie continued to operate it until she retired due to health reasons in 1973. Bessie died two years later in a house fire at her small cottage home in Cedar Key.
New owners continued to upgrade and improve the old building. During the early 1980's Jimmy Buffet (sic) performed in the Neptune Lounge and on the balcony. In 1984 the Island Hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the restaurant became nationally famous.
In the late 1980's, one owner, Marcia Rogers, converted the King Neptune Lounge into a juice bar. Her actions so infuriated the local patrons of the King Neptune Lounge, that they buried her in effigy outside the town hall.
So, Jimmy was there around the time he wrote Incommunicado.
Just a little history from the Island Hotel site.

I'll have to look through the books to see which ones...Lonely Silver Rain? Nightmare in Pink?

Re: "Incommunicado"
It's one of my favorites as well. It'd be nice to see him play it live one of these days. I've been seeing Buffett for over 20 years and don't recall if I've ever seen him do it live. Of course there's a lot I don't recall from all those shows but it's definitely a live rarity.
