A dangerous new weapon for young girls....

Post by blackjack »

really!?!?!

Penn Hills, PA teen suspended for eyebrow shaverThursday, May 21, 2009
The Associated Press
A Penn Hills teenager was suspended from middle school when a random search turned up an eyebrow shaver in her handbag.

Officials at Linton Middle School recommended at a disciplinary hearing yesterday that 15-year-old Taylor Ray Jetter be expelled for the rest of this year and 45 days next year.

Miss Jetter said she doesn't consider the eyebrow trimmer a weapon. She fears expulsion will hurt her chances of becoming a nurse-anesthetist. She's a Girl Scout and a member of the school's basketball team, choir and leadership team.

The school released a statement saying it has a standard disciplinary policy that addresses all students equally. Miss Jetter's mother, Lisa Ray, says she doesn't believe her daughter has been given a chance.

The rest of the year this year AND 45 days next years? Either is stupidity extreme. Together it's just head scratchingly asinine.

I guess public schools can do some really stupid things too. But really what why do you need an eyebrow shaver in school? 5 o'clock shadow after gym class?

An eyebrow shaver is a razor blade on a stick, sometimes with serrated teeth. It could easily be used as a weapon, even if that wasn't the intended use.

Yeah, that's the same thing they show on TV with the woman dragging it back and forth across her skin to show "it can break skin, it only cuts hair."

If you want to say, "it can be disassembled and used as a weapon" so can my ball point pen. There has to be some intent for it to be a weapon.

The entire administration of that school district needs to be sacked and replaced by people who can prove they're more intelligent than a deep-fried Twinkie. This is idiotic beyond belief.

What's even sadder is that the girl's parents will probably (and rightfully) sue, and money that should have gone to educate kids will go to the lawyers.

What's next? Pencils longer than a certain length? Rat-tail combs? Spiral notebooks (because of the wire)?

I agree that the incident seems trivial on the surface, but the illustrations provided in this thread do appear to show a naked blade. Probably not much good as a stabbing weapon, but I bet it could do some serious damage if used to slash at someone's face or arms.

But in the absence of use of this 'beauty aid' as a weapon, or even evidence of intent to use, the punishment strikes me as massive overkill.
Like using a sledgehammer to swat a mosquito.

No, that's an eyebrow trimmer- that's basically just a mini-sized hair trimmer/sheep shearer.

The razor doesn't need disassembled- it's literally a razor blade in a plastic handle, maybe with sharp pointy teeth to keep it from hitting skin, or wire wrapped around the blade.

Here's a link to one- you can click on the picture and get a close-up.
