Mr Play wrote:Say what you will about his music - either you like it or you don't. The guy knows how to take care of his fans / customers though. When his Frisco concert was cut short due to severe thunderstorms, he came back for a free concert 2 weeks later. He played non-stop for 3 1/2 hours and when he ran out of his songs he did covers from the likes of the Eagles, U2, Steve Miller Band, Tom Petty, George Strait, etc etc etc. Mac Macanally was onstage with him for most of the night. It was one of the most high-energy shows I've seen from anyone.
The tailgate party is what you make it. I took the Leaky Tiki to both of the Frisco shows. At the make-up concert, the video guys came out to see our setup. When they told Kenny what we were up to, he came out and got in the hot tub with us. Do a google search of Kenny Chesney Hot Tub and look at all of the links that pop up.

And the Mr. Play legacy continues! Another awesome experience Bill!
As far as Kenny goes, I've seen him 3 times. He definitely brings the energy and plays to the crowd. Do I sometimes feel like he's copying JB, (with the addition of horns last year being the latest), sure I do.
But, he obviously brings enough to the table to pick up the Corona sponsorship.
We've been to a show where the tailgating was a 2 (Greensboro, middle of the week) and a show where the tailgaiting was a solid 8 (Columbia on a Saturday)
Lucky Old Sun is a great Trop Rock collection. KC will never replace Jimmy, but he may keep the tropical spirit alive in the coming years (especially if he were to add Mac to his band if Jimmy ever quits touring.)

Well, like Jimmy, he's smart enough to connect with really talented musicians like Mac.

I love Jimmy's music......
I love Kenny's music......
I agree w/ the "apples and oranges" comment and I do not think Kenny
is trying to be like Jimmy, just doing what works.
AWESOME pics Mr Play, Im jealous!!

Chesney is playing Jones Beach the 24th. If I didn't have to be @ Great Woods early the next day, I just might give it a go...

Deja vu all over again..
1 KC is no JB and JB is no KC.
2 Country: I like ANY stylel if it's good.
3 Since I am a guitarist, I gotta say Brad Paisley is UN flippin believably good and his show is much better than KC, not NEARLY as much hype
4 THE REAL REASON I'M BEATING THIS DEAD HORSE: I joined KC's forum to whine about his pre sale system, it really stinks. I politley stated an honest opinion and was promptly
CENSORED. I was told I was being rude, neagative and used foul language.

Well, I was b#%&*ing a tad, but honestly and politely. My bad language was using "$#&" instead of a common term for fecal material. No kidding!
And I agree with whoever said KC fans are not as phriendly as y'all!!!!

I agree with you regarding the fans. While we have met good people at KC's concerts, the best KC tailgate still does not match up with any of the JB concerts that I have attended. It's a different crowd, where the emphasis seems to be more about "how many bottles can I drink" rather than "who can I share these bottles with?"

allucaneatbuffett wrote:Ok, so last Friday night I went to see Kenny Chesney at Merriweather in Maryland. I am sort of a country music fan, but not much. My wife is big time, and she wanted to go see Chesney, so a few of us went. I remembered seeing a thread on here somewhat recently about Chesney being the next Buffett. Well, after my experience, he's got a long way to go.!!!
First, we got to the tailgate right at 2:00 when the gates opened. On a scale of 1-10 as a comparison to Buffett tailgate, I give it about a 2!! What a yawn. The parking lot didn't really get filled up until about 5:00 or so. And it was quiet and not much happening. We had a good time amongst the 6 of us, but overall, everyone kept to themselves.
Second, When Kenny finally got close to coming on stage, he had a video play on the stage screens of shots of him sprawled on his boat playing a guitar. Followed by him drinking Corona's on a beach. There were even about 5 beach balls flying around the front of the stage.
It was clear to me, maybe i am wrong, that he is sort of trying to create an image similar to Buffett and perhaps even try and mock his success to almost draw his fans. Especially since JB may be done soon.
Third, there was even a song he played (can't remember what it was), where he held his arm up and sang the song while getting the crowd to hold their arm up and sway side to side at different points. Clearly reminded me, of course, of FINS!!!!
Don't get me wrong, it was a decent concert. Although many people around us were sitting the whole time. But it was also evident that there is some level of Buffett "wanna be" going on. He is a Country Singer, but he appears to be trying to expand his fan base by mocking Buffett.
But in the end, the whole experience wasn't even close. Tailgate, "pre show" atmosphere, crowd enthusiasm, etc. Just didn't have it. Sorry Kenny, Buffett you aren't.
Could it be that he's not "mocking" Jimmy, but just admires him and was influenced by him?

Chesney freely admits Buffett is a large influence on his music. Both shows have their upsides. I would say I enjoy Buffett shows more, because I fear every show I see might be the last I see.
However, I fully expect Chesney to pick up our household's annual concert mantle once Jimmy retires.
Jimmy admits Bob Marley and Jerry Jeff Walker, and I don't know if fans of these artists hold as much contempt for Jimmy as Parrotheads hold for Chesney fans. Me, I like all those artists. Since music is a derivative art form, I don't expect wholly original music from any artist.

I know in Kansas City this year Kenny did one hell of a show, he had some of the Wailers on stage all night, gave Mac all sorts of prop's for being one of the best songwriters out there. He played almost 3 hours and it was great!
This year in Vegas, Jimmy's show was not as good as past show's I have seen, now Mac on Friday night was awesome. Mac wouldn't tell us if he has any new songs on the upcoming Buffett album, but has a lot it sounds like will be recorded in Nashville soon!
We will spend our money on both artists, I hope Jimmy tours forever.
Now I would love to see a All Trop Rock Party Tour with all the bands most of us like, but they don't play all over. Boat Drunks, Howard Livingston, Jimmy & the Parrots, John Frinzi, Tall Paul & Crawdaddy, Phins, and more. Now that would be a nice saturday festival!
Everyone have a great one!

That was a great show in KC. My wife had acess to her company's box, so all you can drink really helps make the show better. The only bad thing about the Sprint Center is no place to tailgate per se. Of course you can drink at Power & Light, but it's not the same.

I think this subject will always and forever be just a matter of opinion.
and Feesh - George Strait is the bomb.... get that right out there.... HOWEVER.. I personally seem to be drawn to more Kenny songs and I think that's because I'm a chick and you're not...lol When I first started listening to country - The songs he had out really grabbed me - and of course the one that Mac wrote! But I liked all the others .. old blue chair.... Sexy Tractor... Keg in the CLoset. I think I can relate to him bc we are the same age and were in college at the same time. I have neverhad a bad time at a show, but the parking lot is not quite a "Buffett" parking lot - but I can see they are working on it!!

I also love Kenny's Christmas album. I just don'tlike to compare people - I like Kenny - I like George I like Jimmy. and that's good enough for me!

Merriwether is NOT the best place to take in a Chesney concert. The local autorities have been cracking down on tailgates for years now and it is a known quantity. The facility itself is OK at best. Really too small to handle Chesney now.
I have seen Kenny at Merriwether and have seen 2 stadium shows. I have had a BLAST at all of them. He puts on a terrific, high energy show and I am not sure anyone can argue that point. I am not sure it is worth wasting time comparing him to Jimmy. Jimmy is Jimmy and Kenny is Kenny. Pretty deep, I know.
Bottom line you pay your money and want to be entertained. Kenny delivers that.

I'll have to agree. I am not a fan of country music but had the opportunity to cash in on some free tickets to the show in Philly. We had a great time tailgating but you can do that anywhere if you get a good bunch of people together. The parking lots we're packed, little decoration or shannaigans other then the ocassion boobie flash and a stray rebel flag. We got into the show as Montgomery Gentrey was singing their last song and got a few beers, they were cheaper then an Eagles game! Sugarland came on, ehhhhhhh...they we're so so. The best part of their performance was when they got into these giant hamster balls and ran out over the crowd. Then another intermission....the lights dimmed and Mr. Chesney pops out on a crane above the crowd and is taken to the stage. I'll have to give the show an A for entertainment but can someone tell me.........does this guy even play an instrument? All he did was run around stage singing, run back, pick up the guitar, strum a chord and let it hang around his neck. I don't know, maybe because I started playing I pay more attention to the performers instrumental talents, who knows it just irked me. So I'll give the show a 3 out of 5, if I'm ever given free tickets...sure I'd go again. If the monies coming out of my pocket I'd think 3x but to each his own enjoy the rest of the tour.

I wanted to take in the Jones Beach show to see what it was all about. Unfortunately, it was the night before Great Woods. And between driving from JB to Foxboro Ma. & getting up early for the tailgate, Great Woods won out.
