Convicted swindler Bernard Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison Monday for fraud so extensive that the judge said he needed to send a symbolic message to those who might imitate his fraud and to victims who need relief.

Re: Now, Madoff made off with all the money
assets seized, and liens levied to the tune of $170 billion as well. The penthouse in NY, no longer his. The house in Palm Beach, gone. And hiding money and or other assets with Mrs. Madoff, they get to keep about $2.5 million in stuff according to one report. While not reduced to living in a cardboard box on the street, it is nice to see the message sent.

I think a better message would be sent if the others that participated in his scheme were prosecuted. His wife getting anything is a travesty.

Re: Now, Madoff made off with all the money
well, given the magnitude of the crime, and the length of sentence, it would be nice to see him dropped somewhere other than a minimum-security facility. and I agree with Skibo in that those who collaborated with him on this should be taking a fall for about half the sentence time of the ringleader. With the SEC oversight folks who poo-poo'd the idea anything was wrong getting fired, and jailed for complicity as well.

Re: Now, Madoff made off with all the money
well, she does have to economize now. her attitude in previous interviews was as bad or worse than Mrs. Ken Lay's was following the collapse of Enron.ph4ever wrote:springparrot wrote:She is only left with $2.5 million....poor babySkibo wrote:I think a better message would be sent if the others that participated in his scheme were prosecuted. Here's a statement from the mrs in the Wall Street Journal:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124629343582068785.html
According to Reuters, she agreed to be subject to civil claims so that she could keep the $2.5 mil.

might have been nice for her to have gotten out in front of the problem rather than waiting for the sentencing before issuing the statement.

Re: Now, Madoff made off with all the money
Why is this under Jimmy Buffett Discussion thread?
What does Madoff, his wife, and cronies have to do with this topic?
Letting any of MAdoff's family members keep anything is disgusting, when so many peoples lives were wiped out.
Now we the taxpayers get to pay for the rest of Madoff's life. Madoff's medical, his dental, his room and board, and his security. At what cost to taxpayers?
Who is going to pay for all of the people and their lives, that Madoff and his scheme effected?
He is not going to be sent to some real hellhole. He will wind up in what ammounts to some high security condo.
He is not going to suffer much of anything compared to what real people have lost including their future.
150 years for how many BILLIONS of dollars and lives ruined? Seems like he made a most profitable investment for himself. I really do not wonder what he would have done if he had been subject to the same scheme.

Probably because it was created here/there by mistake. I'm sure a friendly neighborhood mod will be along eventually to move it.Spider Johnson wrote:Why is this under Jimmy Buffett Discussion thread?

I put it here because of the song and the title of the thread.Hockey Mon wrote:Probably because it was created here/there by mistake. I'm sure a friendly neighborhood mod will be along eventually to move it.Spider Johnson wrote:Why is this under Jimmy Buffett Discussion thread?
Now, Madoff made off with all the money.
Now his clients are down to skunk weed.
Repeat after me, it’s so easy to see
We’re only talking simple greed.
And those Somalian pirates are counting all the gold.
While Bush and Cheney ain’t around
and all the good lookers seem to be Czech hookers
from Key West to London town.
However, a mod knows where the thread is and it has been discussed.
IF it is moved, I'm fine with it.
