I was at the London gig last night

Post by UKDeb »

Hey there, fellow Parrotheads :D . I'm Deb from the UK (not just a clever username  ) and I was lucky enough to experience my first Jimmy concert last night. For those of you who don't know, the Shepherd's Bush Empire is a tiny venue - an old-fashioned theatre with a capacity of 2000 - so a pretty special place to see anyone, let alone a legend who normally plays to audiences in the tens of thousands.

We arrived at around 2pm yesterday afternoon with the intention of being first in line. There were half a dozen hardcore Parrotheads already there (from Oklahoma City and Miami, from memory). They were in line for the ground floor standing area, but knowing the venue, we'd booked for the lower circle and were first in line for the separate entrance to the upper levels. All the ticketing for this venue is unreserved, albeit there are seats in the upper levels. To either side of the auditorium on the lower level are two small rows of seats. We wanted to be in the front row, closest to the stage (those seats are very close to the stage). The doors opened promptly at 7pm and we literally ran up those stairs. Imagine our shock when we found that both rows on either side, plus the front row at the rear all had "reserved" signs on them. To say we were devastated would be an understatement! The security staff told us they'd been reserved for VIP guests of the band. WHAT?! They apologised, saying it was extremely unusual at this venue. When the show started, hardly any of them had been taken, but people did start to trickle in and fill them during the first half hour. From a comment Jimmy made, it seems they were employees of the recording studio in London which he and Mac have used for many years (and where some elements of the new album are currently being recorded). The worst of it is, most of them didn't seem to "get it" at all. They could at least have had the decency to look as though they were having a good time!

Anyway, we weren't going to let that spoil our first ever Jimmy gig and we did have a fantastic view from our second row seats at the rear of the circle. Jimmy and the Coral Reefers came on stage on the stroke of 8:15 (I hate it when bands make you wait) and played the most amazing 2 1/2 hour set (actually, it was probably closer to 2 hours, 15, but that doesn't roll off the tongue so easily  ). And guess what? I caught one of the signed flip-flops which Jimmy threw into the audience at the end of the show, so I guess we weren't meant to be in those side seats, after all. :P

Can I upload photos and/or video here? Anyone have any questions?

Oh, I meant to add that Jimmy seemed to be genuinely enjoying himself and pretty thrilled with the reception he got AND HE PROMISED TO BE BACK, SAME TIME, SAME PLACE NEXT YEAR!

Hi, I was there last night-it was amazing wasn't it. I noticed that crowd in the balcony too-never have I seen a group of people look so bored and disinterested. Anyone would have thought they were at a funeral! Can't wait for next year-roll on july 2010!

Hi,
My wife and I were both at the gig last night. First time for us both. Great venue! When we were getting ready to go to the gig I considered taking some binoculars to make sure I could see Jimmy. Glad I did'nt bother. As it turnued out I was standing almost right in front of him. Got to shake his hand at the end I was so close. The icing on the cake was getting a plectrum thrown into the crowd by Pete Mayer. If ever you get a chance to get one it has the tour name stamped on it. (although this one said Bama Breeze Tour 2007). Ray & Diana

I'm so glad you all had such a great time, I was thinking yesterday that it's great you all had a chance to see him this year. A word of caution though.... NEVER believe he means it when he says he'll be back next year. Seriously, he told Portland Oregon he'd be back "next year" something like six years ago and he's never been there since. Not that he WON'T but don't hang your hat on it. By comparison, he never says he'll be back to the venue I see him at and he's back every year like clockwork. Go figure

I'm just sayin. :-?

Glad you folks enjoyed the show. :D It sounds fantastic.

I'd add my nod to the comment about not taking the "I'll be back next year" too seriously. I believe that Jimmy enjoys the moment wherever he is so much that he says that...but logistics of only touring so much time now get in the way of him going back to every place he enjoys.

In his younger days when he did a gazillion concerts every year, it was likely that he would be back the next year....now not so much....

Welcome to BuffettNews UKDeb. Your first experience at a JB concert sounds fab, a venue for 2k sounds marvelous to me. You are one lucky fan. I for one look forward to seeing your pictures (did you have to smuggle in your camera ?) Enjoy your day/evening. PotP

I'm glad to hear that y'all had a great time with Jimmy, over on your side of the Big Water. It's easy for some of us to get jaded over here, with concerts every year and on RM. Here's hoping the party never ends for you.

Yeah, and I don't know whether he managed to see the end of the epic men's singles match, but I do know he was very late turning up. A friend who got held up in traffic (and, thus, was very late herself), happened to be in line by the stage door when he rolled up. She told him he was late - 20 years late! Apparently she got a great smile and a hug, so that traffic did her a favour!

He was so cool with him. I hope you covered his ears, as Jimmy instructed, during "Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw"

Thanks for the welcome, PotP :) No need to smuggle cameras into this venue, but sadly we only had a little Sony thing. We did get a few photos and some rather poor video footage with it, but I wish we'd taken the DSLR. My brother's probably got some better photos, so I'll try to acquire them!
