Surgery music
Recently had eye surgery and was semi-conscious for some of it. I remember James Taylor music playing in the operating room but don't recall any Buffett. I've heard that some surgeons listen to Buffett while they operate. Anyone have that experience?

Re: Surgery music
When I had my gall bladder out, the doctor asked me what kind of music I wanted played while he was doing the surgery. Before I could say anything, my sister said "Jimmy Buffett".
He had 4 SYKBH songs on his Ipod... he pulled them up and told her after it was done it was just enough music to get it all completed.

Re: Surgery music
My last surgery the anesthesiologist asked what kind of music I listened to. I went to sleep listening to OPH and woke up in recovery.
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.

Re: Surgery music
There is a movie called "The Doctor" with William Hurt which uses Buffett music in surgery - if you've never seen it check it out.

Re: Surgery music
I am a surgical nurse & would have to say that 99% of the surgeons I have worked with listen to music...
most are cool with whatever the circulating nurse has on the iPod.
One doc I work with frequently listens to The Dead, System of a Down, Metallica, Manson...
One doc I used to work with loved my DJ skills & was a very happy camper when I played Buffett for him, but also
loved Motown.
I've only had ONE surgeon ask "what the hell is this?" when I played JB, but he was a total stroke!!!

Re: Surgery music
They asked me what kind of music I liked when I was having a heart catheterization done. When I said Buffett, the Doctor smiled and said great. And Jimmy played until they were done.
It's been a while, but it seems to me I was awake for most of the procedure. Or was that just the drugs? One thing about medical procedures, they have tendency to give you stuff so that you don't remember much of anything correctly

Re: Surgery music
I haven't worked in cath lab, so I'm not sure about the anesthesia they prefer. I wonder if you had MAC anesthesia- "twillight" to most people.
"local" where the patient only receives local at the site...example: a patient is having
a mole removed & the surgeon will just use numbing medication around the mole
similar to novocaine at the dentist
"twillight" you're given medications to help you relax, relieve pain, & forget, but all of these
medications affect people differently... You may remember stuff, but are sooooo relaxed you may be dozing off, or sleeping, or just awake enough to follow directions.
"General" good night, Irene!! you're out, completely! And if you're not, you are in the rare percentage of the population
who experience anesthesia awareness...

I asked what was queued up when they wheeled me into the O.R. last time, they told me Don Henley. I was fine with that.

Re: Surgery music
When I heard surgery, right before I went out they were playing N Sync's "Bye Bye Bye". I thought it was funny that surgeons were listening to N Sync. I guess the title was a joke.

Re: Surgery music
On the animal doc side of things, I would agree that most GPs listen to music in surgery and with surgeons proper, it's probably 50/50 in my experience. Maybe more. JB surgery memories:
1-there's a clinic in northwest Texas that is owned by two huge PHs. They have Jimmy on all the time.
2-when I was in school, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays was once playing in the surgery suite while one of the residents was doing surgery on a knee. When PTM got to the audience sing-along MJ line, he leaned back, belted out the famous jazz musician line and then went back to work like nothing happened.
My personal oddest musical memory from surgery involves the first fractured femur I fixed. The dog had been gunshot, and "When The Bullett Hits The Bone" was on the radio. No lie.

Re: Surgery music
I can't really say that I was paying close attention to the music for my four surgeries!!
I was a little preoccupied with what was about to happen to me!!
As a scrub nurse in the Labor and Delivery OR, however, we didn't listen to any music.
The surgeries were too quick and too intense to listen to music.

My wife works closely with alot of doctors. I would guess 65-75% of them like Buffett. But it makes sense to me as alot of them have boats or fly in their free time.

Re: Surgery music
Have a friend who is an OB Tech in Cheyenne, WY. One of the doctors there only listens to JB when he operates.
We definitely think that we're going to check the music choices if surgery is going to happen for either of us. They better be playing JB.
