Key point here....TELEPROMPTER. Jimmy's said a bazillion times when he needs the teleprompter, he'll stop
The follow up makes it okay for me....
OK, so it’d be cooler if Bruce actually knew every lyric to every rock song ever written. But it’s still impressive to watch the guy taking audience requests ranging from the Ramones’ “I Wanna Be Sedated” to ZZ Top’s “I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide,” both of which he pulled out at his last Boston stops in April.
Spontaneous show that happens on the fly vs. one that's choreographed to a tee? I'm going to go for the former each and every time. Which still isn't to say I would ever turn down an opportunity to see Buffett. I just think it's about making the extra effort as Bruce and so many others do and as Buffett himself once did before his concerts began to border on bad off-Broadway productions.

I've heard that quote by JB, but I'm pretty sure he's using a teleprompter now.

No one, puts on a show like Bruce. End of story. To compare Bruce and anyone is not fair.
At the same time, I like going to see Jimmy for different reasons. There is something to be said for thousands of people all putting their arms together for "Fins" on the lawn at Alpine (or wherever). There is something about everyone singing along to their favorite song of his from the same set list he has been doing all summer. Nothing wrong with that.

I also happen to think that Bruce is one of the best live performers around--but again, it is not for his set selection, but for the energy level and quality of the performance.
Jimmy (or anyone else for that matter) could do an entire concert of songs that most of the audience doesn't know, and it could be a totally flat performance. I want a performer with energy, and who comes across and genuinely loving what they are doing as opposed to one who seems to be doing his or her job.
Though I have not been crazy about how stagnant this year's setlist is, the performance level and energy level seems pretty up this year.

I guess I don't get it.....I'll agree that Bruce in his heyday was awesome as I saw him 3 times in the 80's, but if his shows are anything like his Superbowl show, I'll pass, as it's nothing like I remember. Bruce was gasping for breath after 1 minute on stage....you could see him trying to do the things he did 20 years ago, but I thought it was painful to watch.
So, when people start comparing Jimmy to Bruce, I don't get it....and I especially don't get Jimmy being compared to an off broadway production.

He most certainly is. What a liar!
In fact, in some of the recored versions of the shows, you can here him talking to his techs about queing up the teleprompter before a song. I don't care though and it doesn't bother me. Remembering all of the chords and lyrics to all of those songs gets tough.

I agree! That was a horrible performance. You really can't compare the two. They are completely different. Jimmy looks better as he has gotten older and Bruce looks worse. Who cares about a teleprompter? With the number of songs they sing, how do they remember all the lyrics without one?
He's not "mailing it in." Anyone who thinks that needs to go to a show and sit up front...you will quickly change your mind. Jimmy and the band are loving every minute of it...and so is the crowd.
People sitting at home listening to the live broadcasts on Radio Margaritaville show after show have no right to complain that the setlist is the same. Go to one show a year and have a great time...or be thankful that you can listen to all the shows and have fun. It is not easy to have a band that size switch songs every 5 minutes to make some people happy. Even if they did, others would complain about something else.
Thanks, Jimmy, for still playing. I don't care what you play, I'm still going to your shows. And Rocky Raccoon really does it for me!
i know its been said a million times over by many of us here but my only complaint is the number of cover songs that have been added the past few years. i dont understand why so many people who have seen jimmy through the years get so excited each new year at him adding more of them into the show in lieu of his own great catalog of music that is seldom played.we go years of not hearing songs from entire albums but your sure to hear several covers of songs in the vein of "glory days", "yellow submarine", etc,.songs such as those werent in the shows up until the last several tours so the point is he never needed them to begin with. his shows always sold out before them so the argument that he plays them because of the casual fans is bogus. he may play them because he likes them and i totally understand that but i do think someone of his caliber and vast catalog needs to place a limit on the number of them in the show.

I just look at it as a successful musician/performer taking the opportunity he has to honor musicians/songwriters he admires by covering some of their material. they aren't always my favorites, but they tell me something about Jimmy and the music he is paying attention to.

Very well said and I agree with you. Playing devil's advocate, I am sure you realize the magnitude of songs that Jimmy has recorded, even in a studio setting, that are covers. There are SO many songs that he has done that people think are original JB songs, when in fact they are covers themselves. Stories We Could Tell, Coast of Marseilles, Defying Gravity, just to name very few.

oh absolutely the list is very long for that category and there are a ton of those that arent even played. i would love for him to break out a song like "the perfect partner", "savanah fare you well", "mademoiselle", "why you wanna hurt my heart", etc. those are amazing songs!

The reason Jimmy's shows are so enjoyable, is that if you're lucky enough to be close to the stage you can see how much he's enjoying himself on stage. If playing the songs he's playing is what does it for him....then who are we to say it's wrong?

Very well said. Any show I have been to, he always had looks liked he is having a good time. The set lists are what they are, he's up there and he is having fun, so is the band.
