Is Jimmy "mailing it in"?

Ok, another night with the EXACT same setlist. I know that Jimmy is getting older and we as fans are all lucky that he is still touring but does doing the SAME SHOW every single time he's on stage count as mailing it in? Especially at the ticket prices Jimmy charges do you think he should mix up the setlist. The man does have 26+ albums to choose from.

This tour has gotten "stale" pretty quickly as far as the setlists go. The new songs he introduced at the shows seem to be too much of a "novelty". I'm hoping his experience at the "Buffet Hotel" will bring something good and more substantial...

the thing is, he is playing new songs in the set and i do agree that i think they are a bit more on the novelty end and were designed for the times, but it also seems to me that since 2005, the shows have become more predictable with the non yellow album songs. add to the fact that you know he is adding a new sing along cover tune to the already beaten to death beg, southern cross, scarlet begonias, etc. every year and its pretty obvious the shows are not as good as they once were. with all the setlist databases available on the internet you gotta wonder if he looks at what he's played over the past few years or even what he played at the same venue from year to year. the setlist this year also has way to many yellow songs in a row during the first set.

i think the point is the fans know exactly what he's going to play and likewise know that he's not going to pull out a really obscure song(although rarely it does happen.) you can go album by album and for example, if they are playing something from last mango in paris its either the title track, jolly mon, desperation samba, or gypsies in the palace. hes not going to play beyond the end or the perfect partner. it seems like its that method that he uses to put the sets together.i have casual fans that i go to the shows with that ask "hey does he ever play anything from this album besides....." and the answer is usually no.

don't get me wrong, i still love the shows because they are an event that i go to with family and friends and we always have a good time. its just the that he nowadays he is playing more of the songs i dont want to hear.

Waah Waah. You know - we all would like a whole new setlist every night - but it ain't gonna happen. As has been said before - be grateful that at 62 and zillions of money - he is still touring. Pass me the popcorn please.

I don't think he's "mailing it in". Certain songs may not be among my favorites but I enjoy - no dare I say appreciate - him for getting out there and giving us the best party of the year. :)

uh.....yeah.

Quite honestly, it's a 3 step process....
1. Jimmy announces show.
2. I go, enjoy hearing what he wants to play, enjoy tailgating with my BN family from across the country, and have a GREAT TIME.
3. Repeat Step 1.

I'm not trying to be a p r i c k nor a blind follower, but I recognize at every show there are virgins paying as much money as I am, and the songs they want to hear are the yellow album, 5 O'clock somewhere, BEG, Southern Cross etc, becasue that's what they know. So I go into it knowing they'll be played, and enjoy the gems he does throw in. At GW last year we got "God's Own Drunk" and an accoustic "trying to Reason..". This year he debuted "Nobody from Nowhere", plus we heard Surfing in an Hurricane, Rhumba Man, Alot to Drink about all for the first time live. On top of that, he closed with an Accoustic "Tin Cup Chalice". I also heard for the first time live "Lage Nom Ai", "My Head Hurts.."
So...put it in context....there is a lot of new music, but still the old favorites for the new and casual fans.

Just my opinion...YMMV :D

Hmmmm...let's see...

Let's say he plays three new rare songs every single concert. That would be nearly 40 songs just over the course of the summer. This 62 year old legend who has sung well over 500 songs would have to rehearse 40 more songs with his traveling circus of a band, as well as remember all the words. His music in comparison with others is quite difficult since very rarely an entire verse repeats.

In my opinion, I think just these few extra rehearsals are a bit difficult to do when you're, oh..let's say..playing in London, flying the East Coast, meeting a deadline for a NEW album, partially owning a football franchise, and scheduling through the rigors of a St. Bart's trip.

I know, I know. You'll say the fan suffers. Personally, I don't feel abused or cry in depression about dropping $136 for a ticket during the 32534632 playing of Margaritaville...I'm far too lost in fantasy. Of courrrrrrse I'd love none other than to hear a lovely rendition of Ace or Savannah Fare You Well...but, this man is a bit busier pleasing us than we think sometimes.

i agree with you with, he does and should play the yellow album because thats what the majority want to hear. and to be honest i do want to hear a lot from that album as well. its no different than any other band playing their "hits". i was also at the shows you are talking about and loved them both. my point is you can look at every album of his and for the most part determine what he would play off it and what he wouldnt play off it. its the additional cover songs(i.e., yellow submarine, etc.) that show up each year that frustrates me.i loved hearing lage nom ai, my head hurts, etc.im not trying to be a p**** either, its just a discussion.

So what if Jimmy plays the same set list for every concert in the Summzercool Tour. Every band that tours does this. It's not like his set list doesn't change from year to year.

Hmmmm...I guess just about every band/performer is just mailing it in. Is there any tour that doesn't play pretty much the same set list in every city? There is an awful lot of rehearsal time before the tours start, to do a different show every night would be insane. Mailing it in, I don't think so, getting old and slowing down is more likely. Jimmy has never shown an inclination to mail it in, I don't think he would.

Let's not forget too that we're spoiled. Through this forum and others and Radio Margaritaville live concert broadcasts, we get to listen to and over-analyze each and every concert. I can't think of ANY OTHER ARTIST that still tours as much, year-after-year AND allows this amount of FREE show experiences to EVERY CONCERT.

The same thing happens over at the Springsteen boards. Except they dont get the free shows. But the complaint about setlist and he didnt play this song or that song. These boards are a blessing and a curse.

Some people claim that there's a Jimmy to blame, but I know, it's our own damn fault.

To quote John Winger: "We’re mutants, there’s something wrong with us, there’s something very, very wrong with us. Something seriously wrong with us."

In other words, each show should be for the people who are in attendance at that show only. Not for the people who listen on RM, and not for the people who check out the setlist after each show. There are plenty of us on BN who go to multiple shows a year, and / or listen to them regularly, but that's not who Jimmy and the band are catering to when they're on stage. I'd bet for most of the people in attendance, it's a once-a-year event at most, and for many it's their first time, and none of them have any idea that their setlist is similar to others on the tour.

They do throw in some gems along the way though, so no, I don't think he's mailing it in. I think some people just expect too much.
