Most recent news says he could make landfall further north and east of my part of the province, but we are all under storm watches and warnings of storm surges all along the south coast . . . all the workers on the oil and gas rigs have been brought ashore. Fishing and pleasure boats are in ports and secured, as much as people will comply. I hope the thrill seekers will heed the police warnings to stay off beaches and away from surf zones.

I"m glad that things sound a little better for you, Cate...but I know it's still going to be a rough ride. Got you in my prayers, my friend.tikitatas wrote:Most recent news says he could make landfall further north and east of my part of the province, but we are all under storm watches and warnings of storm surges all along the south coast . . . all the workers on the oil and gas rigs have been brought ashore. As for the thrillseekers...you know they'll show up.

Full blown Darwinian activity at Brenton Point in RI. Seas running about 8-10, tide rising, and morons out on the ledges. Won't be surprised if we lose a few...

Re: Cowabunga! Surf's up!
Next week will mark the 47th annual East Coast Surfing Championship (ECSC) in Virginia Beach, Virginia (my hometown). ECSC is North America's Oldest Running Surfing Competition and the second oldest continuously-run surfing contest in the world.
More years than not, the surf is, ahhhh, well not necessarily spectacular ... but the EVENT is WORLD CLASS. I have only missed a handful of ECSCs in the past 4 decades. Here's hoping some offshore weather keeps the surf churning next weekend as well.
The event is amazing. Live music from national acts on the beach ..... skateboarding, beach flag football championships, beach volleyball championships, bikini contests, beer tents, great food, professional and amateur surfers with big $$ prizes .... ESPN and other media coverage. Just incredible.
In 1992 ...... a lot of my personal surf memorabilia (posters, t-shirts, old boards) was displayed all summer long in a huge surf museum that commemorated the 30th ECSC. That was the year I got married and I was able then to tell my wife "this is not 'JUNK', as you call it, in my basement ... these are MUSEUM ARTIFACTS".
So if you're looking for an extremely stokin' way to end the summer,
check out the 47TH ANNUAL ECSC in VIRGINIA BEACH.
Here's some classic footage from the 1967 ECSC that is worth watching for the awesome surf music, vintage longboard moves and cute 1960's bikinis.
And check out the contrast 40 years later .... in both music and surfing styles ... here is last year's ECSC .....

Re: Cowabunga! Surf's up!
Our beach earlier today. By dark, when they threw us off the beach, the waves were quite a bit larger. Those little black spots are surfers.

Re: Cowabunga! Surf's up!
Well the surf splashed over the road down on NC-12 in Rodanthe, but that didn't stop the traffic or the surfers. Curls came in at 8-10, and traffic kept flowing, thanks to NCDOT. I hope they can keep it going tomorrow.
Wish I was there.
Wish I was there.

Here comes another storm, Tropical Storm Danny is heading up the coast and may be another Cat 1 hurricane by the time it gets to Nova Scotia.

Re: Cowabunga! Surf's up!
Those pier pilings scare me....how many surfers have gotten smeared by them, I wonder.
