Is long term airport parking secure

We have never left a vehicle there. It will be for 3 days. MrOc needs to fly out of Philadelphia. The options are leaving a work truck there with tools in it or my driving him there 1.5 hrs each way and also picking up. Company will pay for parking but not for other forms of transport to and from airport.

At DIA we've parked in their lot, and several different independent companies within a mile or two of the airport, and taken shuttles. Never once have we had a problem.

Where I park in Seattle I wouldn't be worried about leaving a work truck with tools. It's a multi level garage where I pull in on ground level and hand them my keys. Now at DFW and Orlando (where my son parked for trips) there's no way I'd do that. They were lots that were secured by a fence and that's it. It really depends on the lot.

I'd say it depends on the airport....but as a single female I no longer use long term parking. When a very delayed flight had me trying to find my car at 3am in the pouring rain, I realized what a target I could have been had not my wonderful 60 years+ female shuttle driver not driven as close to my car as possible and waited til she knew I was safely on my way. And that's out of Sacramento, a relatively small airport compared to most. Now I s*** it up and park in the structure. I'd never leave my car in a big airport if I could help it, I use an airport limo service when I go out of LAX...between the cost of gas and parking it comes out close to the same price with a lot less hassle.

If he's going to leave his truck, I'd suggest cleaning the tools out, as big a PITA as that may be.

Are there any off site parking services available? They're usually a little cheaper than regular parking, are secured and they shuttle you to the airport...usually a 5-10 minute trip.

I am trying to look into the off site parking. I was wondering if they'd be more secure. Can't empty this truck. Some things are permanently secured to it and we don't have a garage or really any space big enough to put some of the things in. I'm hoping that he will at least do a good tool inventory before going, long overdue.

I am not familiar with Phili airport, but I live about a 5 minute walk to LAX.

If your vehicle looks any way like a truck that would be carrying tools, I say hell no. Unless you change the paint on the side to read Steve’s Pet Mortuary or something else that people looking to break in would want to avoid, I think it’s a bad idea.

Airport parking is a field day for a thief.

Aww crap, Pen....now I have the Wallypark theme song stuck in my head!

There's one here too called The Parking Spot, I think. They have yellow shuttles with black polka dots on them. It doesn't look like they're in Philly though. Hmmm, just read that the shuttles here have changed their colors to USC and UCLA...woot!

A little story about off site parking...

Many moons ago I heard an ad on the radio for a new off site parking service for Sacto, so I decided to try it. It was located at the site of the old Arco Arena, about 7 minutes from the airport. You'd drive in, say howdy, park your car and then they'd drive up to your car, unload your luggage into their van and drive you to the airport. Coming home they'd be waiting for you at the airport, would drive you to your car and put your luggage in, then you stopped by the kiosk on the way out and paid. I paid 4 bucks a day for this service when it first opened! I think it finally went up to 7 or 8 bucks. It was run by a wonderful family, and I was one of their first customers. I referred a lot of people to them. They always remembered me and asked about my niece and nephew and always wanted to see pics if I had them. Then one day I called to make my reservation...and found they'd gone out of business. They left a message on an answering machine thanking all their customers and saying how much they'd miss us. I was BAWLING by the time I hung up...I was so sad I never got to say goodbye. :(

I use Colonial Parking when I travel, cars secured in a fenced lot, cashier and vans there 24 hours. I have never had an issue.

Flying out of Philly, the city controlled main LT lot is very large theft is possible. The lot is just too big and there are no patrols watching other than the transport buses which really don't pay attention. If his company does not have price limits use Wally park. They have a web site and coupons :) They are closest to the airport and have regular shuttles $14-17 per day I believe. There are other good off site lots Colonial was mentioned. I haven't been down there for months so I forget most of them. Wally is pricey but if the cost is approved, very well worth it.

When hubby travels for work, he leaves our "crappy car" at the long term lot for up to 5 days. I think on our honeymoon we left it there for almost 2 weeks. Nothing bad happened to it, but there's nothing desirable about that car.

Depending on the airport I would be very leery of leaving the truck overnight in a long term lot that isn't truly secured. I would go with a privately owned and operated and patrolled lot if at all possible. If that isn't an option, I would park as close to the exit booths or in a brightly lit area that has a camera pointed at it or all three if possible.

I am not as concerned about price as security. We'll pay a bit more for that. Are the Wally lots secure? If so they have a coupon and we can go there.

Not sure about the Philly airport but at other airports Pre-Flight Parking (http://www.preflightparking.com) is generally more secure than the long term lot. Not entirely sure I'd leave any work van on a lot, though.... I like Wayne's thought about a shuttle.

I used to park at Pittsburgh Airport long term all the time, it has been a while, I never had a problem. Then again I keep nothing in my car either.
