Do you remember turning 21?
Hi everyone! Today, my son Tim is 21!! This is cause for celebration!!!
This is a year when Tim's life will change, when he
will no longer be seen as an adolescent, but a man! When we take him out for
his first legal drink, we will have the normal parental concerns over introducing him
to alcohol. We will also have serious concerns! Concerns of how a single
alcoholic beverage will affect his blood sugar. How will we monitor his
carbohydrate intake, what happens if he drops low? Low enough to cause
unconsciousness. Our talk of respecting alcohol will involved these concerns
as well as making sure he has his medic alert tag on at all times, so that
police & rescue people know he is a diabetic, not just an unconscious drunk,
which could have serious consequences. Not quite the message we all received
when we turned 21!
Tim is a simple man, doesn't want a party to celebrate
this milestone, doesn't want a lot of personal gifts, doesn't want a lot of
notoriety. So what can we do to recognize this special man? How about
joining him in his fight for a cure! The Walk to Cure Juvenile Diabetes will
be held on October 25th in Philadelphia. Tim has participated in raising
funds for this walk since he was diagnosed in Feb.1997. He hasn't always
asked for donations, sometimes he just donated his own money. As a family,
we have always walked with Tim. This year I ask you to join us in supporting
Tim and his cause and celebrate his 21st birthday by donating whatever you
can to Tim's team. Below is the link to Tim's donation page, he has set his
personal goal to $500. It would be wonderful if we could surpass his goal
and really celebrate this awesome guy! Thanks in advance!

OH hell yeah.
I was in the Navy going to Data Systems A school. My room mate and I both turned 21 on the same day.
We went to the club where upon he tried to drink 21 Harvey Wallbangers in celebration.
He didn't even come close but it was a great evening.

Re: Do you remember turning 21?
When I turned 21 I had been legal for 3 years so it was no big deal. Back then the legal age was 18.
Now my 18th birthday. That was a huge party!!!

Re: Do you remember turning 21?
Yes I do!
My boyfriend at the time got me a case of 1.75 liter bottles of vodka for my birthday. I drank one of those in just a little over an hour at my party- mad at him for having other plans that night.
Needless to say - I got sick and spent the next day in bed- wishing I was dead. Still had a hangover the day after the day after.
I learned my lesson and never got that sick again. My 25th birthday came close - but didn't top the 21st.

Yes, I was studying for a final and at midnight I went to the fridge, pulled out a beer (a Keystone I think) and sat back down at my desk and drank it while I studied.

I don't remember much about it. I do remember 30!!
I guess it was because I started drinking long before 21 and it was no special deal to drink legally.
I do kinda think it involved going to the Old San Francisco Steakhouse in Austin and then the Skyline Club. There was a girl that would swing over the bar at OSFS and the place is gone now.

The Skyline is gone too and was a great old country and western club where Hank Williams played in his days. (Willie played there and I remember seeing him, but not that night. I think the Skyline was in the movie Honeysuckle Rose from 1980.)
We lived in San Marcos, where it was DRY, and went out in Austin with friends who lived there.
I also remember walking over to a private club in San Marcos, where I went to college, and drinking legally with one of my waitress buddies.
Happy Happy Birthday to Tim and CONGRATS on 21!!!
Fun trying to remember stuff.
Re: Do you remember turning 21?
You're a heck of a lot younger than I am. Legal drinking age was still 21 in 1969! I guess it became legal to drink at age 18 in 1973.ph4ever wrote:When I turned 21 I had been legal for 3 years so it was no big deal. Back then the legal age was 18.
