HD "Flip" Video Cameras

On a lighter note, we are getting ready to head to Orlando in a few weeks and I'm thinking about buying one of these small HD video cameras.

Has anyone used one? How much time can I expect to record on one battery?

Any drawbacks to these?

I would likely look for one with Flash memory that takes SDHC cards for additional memory.

Just seems a lot easier than trying to lug a bigger camcorder.

And, we can take video of John Frinzi at Margaritaville while we are there!

I just took one to MOTM with me. I *LOVE* it. Fits in a pocket, goes anywhere, so simple that even a politician can use it. :)

I bought a rechargeable battery pack for it - when you plug the camcorder into a USB port, it recharges the battery pack. So far I haven't run out of juice.

The cam records for two hours. I've come very close to that without running out the battery pack. The software for getting it onto your computer in M4A format is included and simple to use.

The main drawback so far has been that the software is *so* simple, if you want to do anything other than simple pasting-together and theme music over, you'll need to export to iMovie or a similar movie software package. For me as a musician making music videos, that's a drawback. If you're just doing home movies or simple stuff for YouTube/FB, it's probably sufficient.

I bought mine a month or so ago on Amazon for about $160 including the spare battery pack, a desktop tripod, and shipping.

I don't know if SD cards are an option. It didn't slow me down much, not having them.

One drawback is no optical zoom. They have digital zoom, but your picture quality will suffer. They're great for portability though.

I love mine .... fits in the pocket ... water resistant ... easy to take with me.

Make sure the one you get has the edit/upload software in the camera (the iFlip and the Kodak Zx models both have that software in the camera itself). This makes it easy to quickly USB connect to any PC and edit/upload your video. None of these cameras work very well in low indoor light (images are very yellowed).

Kodak has two cameras that I prefer over the other brands.

I have the Kodak Zx1, which is *water resistant*, meaning it has rubberized ports for cables, and rubberized touch buttons, i.e. no oepnings to let in dirt, sand or water. It can stand being splashed on, rained on, even beer spilled on. It also uses SD cards and comes with an HDMI cable for viewing on an HDTV.

Kodak just came out with a new camera, the Zi8, that has IMAGE STABILIZATION .... a very cool feature that believe me is nice if you plan on walking around and taking videos.

I have this one. I like it for it's size. Takes a good video. The display on the back is a little hard to see in bright sunlight.

I took this video with it. :)
