Songwriter's Sojourn: The series

Post by East Texas Parrothead »

I am one of the luckiest women on the planet when it comes to my job as the arts editor for a daily newspaper in Northeast Texas. My publisher doesn't tell me what to cover ... and they don't put restrictions on how much ink I use.

I've spent the past six months rediscovering the great talent of Texas songwriters and have begun a series about them .... and a couple who might not have been raised here, but who have strong Texas connections.

The first piece - on Justin Townes Earle (Steve's son) - ran Thursday. Here's the link.

http://www.myssnews.com/mysslife/review ... journ.html

I've already talked to Guy Clark.

Cmtfish arranged for me to interview Darrell Scott, a huge talent who produced a couple of Clark's CDs and who gave me the most marvelous quote: "All roads lead to Townes."

Am going to talk to Vince Bell and Marcia Ball and it looks like I'm finally going to get my shot at WAR.

I'm working on getting interviews with Jerry Jeff, Lyle, Ray Wylie, Robert Earl Keen and Nanci Griffith.

Saw Steve Earle this summer, but doesn't look like an interview is going to happen, so I'll write the piece without quotes.

I asked for time with Jimmy, since he spent so much time here in the early days, but his people politely declined. :D

Will finish the series with a 2-piece feature on Townes Van Zandt.

If ya'll have any suggestions for additional Texas songwriters, post 'em here.

Same with questions. I'd love to have your input. Send a PM or post 'em here.

This is going to be great good fun!

Thanks!

You go, Terry! Walt Wilkins comes to my mind for Texas songwriters. He is an original. Gary P. Nunn is right up there with the best! As is Rodney Crowell...for sure!

If I were you, I'd try to get Lloyd Maines also. I wish everybody in Texas knew Terri Hendrix.

Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison make a wonderful story!

Rodney and Clark cut "All She Wants Is You" for the new CD ... maybe I can get in touch with him.

I think Nunn is a great suggestion, too. :D

He plays with Richard Bowden - one of the founders of Music City Texas in Linden ... I do a lot of pieces for MCT, so maybe Richard can get me in touch with Bob. 8)

Thanks, LM. Am pretty sure I can get Ray Wylie again ... just got Nanci Griffith, which thrills me.

I'll check into some of these names.
