My brother has a wireless router in the house, and when I look for available network connections, I get the following option:
Wireless network connection 2
not connected
Compact wireless-G USB adapter #2
So I click on that and I get a message I've never seen before:
Windows can not configure this wireless connection
If you have enabled another program to manage this wireless connection, use that software.
If you wants windows to configure this wireless connection, start the Wireless zero Configuration service. For information about starting the WZC service see article 871122 in the microsoft knowledge base on the microsoft.com web site.
?????
I have the wireless adapter plugged in, but I can't find any software that might have come with it. is there a way to make this work, or do I need to get a new adapter?

What this message is saying is that if you installed some software that came with your wireless card, use that to connect to the network. If you didn't install any software (which it sounds like you did not), then Windows has software that can do this. But, you need to start something (a service) before you can connect to the network.
Follow the instructions in the KB article listed. For the second step, you can just type this from a command prompt: net start "Wireless Zero Configuration". That will start the necessary service. Good luck.

well it worked, and now my computer finds my brothers wireless network. But now it spends about 5 seconds trying to connect before saying that the network is out of range and to search for more networks. which is does and finds my brother's again before going through the same routine again. (When it locates the network, it shows two out of five bars) So I guess my next question is:
Is there a way to boost the strength (range) of the router? It's on the first floor, my room's on the third.

You just need a range extender. They have them at your local Target or Walmart. Should be $10-15.

What you need is a wireless bridge to boost the strength... I had to do the same it entails getting a second router

If you were just a little bit too far away to pick up the signal from your existing wireless router, yes.

I don't believe wireless really exists, it's a myth. I've tried 2 different systems, they work for a few months then quit. Back to the store and they try to sell me another brand, after telling me the others they sold me were the best. Back to wire, I give up.

Sounds like they are just trying to sell you equipment.
We got a wireless modem from the phone company with our DSL connection, two desktops and two laptops work fine.
