Las Vegas for non gamblers?

Post by nutmeg »

OK so I've never been to Vegas. I'm a shopper, not a gambler (I like to know I'm going to get something for my money :P )

My sister and I are taking my 86 year old mother to Henderson (which I understand is a suburb of Las Vegas) to visit her brother in April. Sis and I are staying at Paris in Vegas. I got a pretty good deal through Delta vacations.
(Mom is staying with her brother)

Does anyone have any suggestions for things to do in Vegas if you don't want to frequent the casinos?

The M&M Store, just to see all things M&M.

The last time I saw Jimmy in Vegas, which was eons ago, a group of us went over to the shops at Caesar's Palace. I thought I was going to have a heart attack, I couldn't find any exits. :o It seemed to be the worst designed place I've ever been in....I doubt I'll ever go back.

The Fremont Street experience is touristy, but fun.

Of course you could sit in M'ville all day drankin' ritas....did that with Michi and Steve... [smilie=cheeky-grin.gif]

we were told that you don't need a car on the strip and that it would get in the way more than anything, which was very true. the monorail is the way to go.

however, we did rent a car the first day we were there to get from the airport to the grocerry store and then we drove out to boulder city. had lunch at the the coffee cup http://www.worldfamouscoffeecup.com/index.html

"The Food Network came to Boulder City recently and did a piece on The Cup. Our great food, our specials and our loyal, regular customers were highlighted. We had a ball with host Guy Fieri. He will use The Cup’s piece in his new show, “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.” It should air in the first part of May, 2007."

then we went on to see hoover d*m and lake mead. well worth the drive :D

and i had never been that far west, so i really enjoyed getting out and seeing the landscape on the way there.

if we'd had more time, we could have kept driving and seen the canyon too

and we stopped at the boulder city brewery on the way back to vegas 8)

a really fun afternoon :D

The Shops at Ceasar's Palace. While they are truely proud of every item in their shops, there is some cool stuff if you want to window-shop.

The Venetian has some really great shops....

At night, there is always the Pirate ship fight at Treasure Island, the volcano erupting at the Mirage and the light show downtown.

Fashion Show mall has some great shops too!

Catch a show - I saw Beatles Love a couple of weeks ago. Amazing! Any Cirque show is good - though I understand the one at New York New York is a bit risque.

Go to the spa and get a massage...

Drive out to the Hoover d*m.... go visit Mt. Charleston.

Go to Margaritaville and watch your BN friends on the TVs.... My boss couldn't believe how many people I knew....
I must be wishing on someone else's star....

Head downtown to Freemont street in the evening. They have the overhead light show every hour after dark. There's great people watching. And there are some pretty inexpensive shows. The New Rat Pack at the Plaza puts on a really super show. And the cocktails downtown are significantly cheaper than on the strip.

They hit most of the casino shopping. You have to do SOME gambling...it just wouldn't be a trip to Vegas without it!!! Get 20 or 30 $1 chips and hit the craps table. Small bets on the pass line.....best odds in the casino. Might win a few bucks, but the fun of standing there with everyone laughing and groaning is well worth the money.

Then go shopping!!!!

Oh, yeah....the dancing fountains at the Bellagio. Watch Ocean's 11 before you go, old and new. The series runs on TNT every day.....catch a few episodes of that. Get you in the spirit. I love Vegas. Hope to go again some day.

Incoming Nancy.....

one thing I forgot... Monorail is good.... time it right to get a 24-hr pass. I think there are 3 day passes as well. Double check on-line, there may be a discount.

You should be able to Order one issue of a Vegas Magazine, for April, at the end of March. Gives you insight to what is going on, and coupons

If you want to do Hoover, Red Rock and Freemont, then rent a car - IT IS MUCH CHEAPER!!! The monorail does not hit any of these locations and taxi's will cost you. This is from experience. We used to save the last full day for car rental then used it to go back to the airport - of course there is a surcharge on that now to return to a different location.

I'm jealous! Enjoy

You can have lots of fun in Vegas without gambling.
The pools will be open by April 1 at most of the hotels.
The Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay is really cool. I liked it and I'm picky about Aquariums. It's not huge, but fun.
The Mirage has their volcano that erupts,
TI has their horrifically tacky Pirate Show nightly- worth it for the laughs, and decent special effects, but this version of of the show is ridiculous.
You can check out the gondola rides at the Venetian, go to the top of the Eifel tower in the Paris (only with a coupon, not worth full price).
It is worth it to sign up for at least a couple of players clubs if they give out decent coupons.
Sigfried & Roy's Magic Garden at I want to say the Mirage- especially if there are baby anythings there. No babies, it's just ok. But baby creatures= awesome. At different times I have seen baby dolphins, tigers and leopards.

At Cesar's there are a couple of ticky-tacky things in the shops- like light up fountain shows.

And the shows- Cirque du Soleil Beatles Love is popular, but you are more likely to get a discount ticket for an older Cirque show like Mystere. Each casino will have some show of some type.

Go into the lobby of the Bellagio to see the lovely glass flowers on the ceiling and wonder how the heck they are being held up there. also a nice conservatory. Free.
MGM- has the lion habitat.
NYNY- has the roller coaster ride.

The light show on Fremont street is different at each time slot, so it is worth it to stay for a couple of time slots if you like. Everything is cheaper & closer together there, but not fancy like the strip.

And don't forget the food!
Check out the DK Top 10 Las Vegas book, it is about $12 but it is a good investment even for a short trip. Have fun!

Oh, and PS- going to the Casinos in Las Vegas is about more than gambling- they really are destinations with all sorts of stuff to do without gambling. Think of the big ones on the strip as resorts with a casino inside. You usually have to wind your way through the casino floor to get where you are going, and that is obviously by design, but there is a lot of fun stuff hidden inside.
And I forgot- go into the garden at the Flamingo where they have, yes, Flamingos and other assorted fun birds. They do a couple of educational talks each day there too.

Oh- and the Paris has a fun crepe stand in their little cobblestone shopping area, yum!
