Gonna re-read A Salty Piece of Land
Read it back in 05 and thought it was one of the best books I have ever read and definatley Jimmy's best.
I think i am gonna start it up again tonight.
Do ya'll ever go back and re-read the Jimmy books during the cold months?

Re: Gonna re-read A Salty Piece of Land
Absolutely, yes. The only one I haven't read more than once is Where Is Joe Merchant?
I've read the others so many times each. In fact, this morning, I was reading from Tales from Margaritaville.
I've told my wife that A Salty Piece of Land is probably my favorite book. For some reason I relate to Tully so much. I'm not as shy as he is, though. But still.. I think I know how he felt, working in that fücking go-nowhere job all those years before finally kicking through the glass and leaving that skanky b**** of a boss he had. Good for him.
The only downer for me, though... I wish that Cleopatra would have been in her eighties instead of 101 years old. That made it just seem too far fetched. Other than that, however... that is honestly one of the sweetest books I've ever read.
The best line in the book? When speaking of faith and taking risks in life, Johnny Red Dust told Tully, "Leap. A Net Will Appear". Isn't that just beautiful?

Re: Gonna re-read A Salty Piece of Land
I've read Tales From Margaritaville a number of times as well as Where is Joe Merchant and APL@50.
I have not reread A Salty Piece Of Land though.
I think it's a good book but not my favorite of Jimmy's.
I did not like the ending. It seemed rushed.
TFM,WIJM and APL@50 are like biblical scipture to me.
I can just turn to any page and read a passage.

Re: Gonna re-read A Salty Piece of Land
I have read TFM a dozen times, ASPOL 3 times and APL@50 twice...and it's about time to start anew. I agree with Michael about it being like scripture, and a dream come true would be to hear that they are making "Take Another road" and "ASPOL" andmaking it into a trilogy of movies, with Lena Horne playing Cleopatra and Jimmy playing Willie Singer.sonofabeach wrote:I've read Tales From Margaritaville a number of times as well as Where is Joe Merchant and APL@50.

Re: Gonna re-read A Salty Piece of Land
Actually, I understand that. After reading Where is Joe Merchant, I couldn't bring myself to read it again. And hell... that's my favorite genre (violent comedy). I love reading Tim Dorsey, Carl Hiaasen, Bob Morris, and Dave Barry (Big Trouble), and more. But sadly, Jimmy's WIJM had what it takes to compete with the others. So I get it. Different strokes and all....pair8head wrote:Different strokes for different folks right?MrTwain wrote:BLASPHEMER!! HERETIC!!pair8head wrote:Get your flame throwers ready...........

SPOL and PL@50 are my favorites... I have read all or part of PL@50 4 or more times. I love the part where he uses the expired card and takes off to Miami and stays with Jerry Jeff. And Murphy says..."hell Jerry let's go to Key West."

Re: Gonna re-read A Salty Piece of Land
I'm reading ASPOL for the first time. In fact, when I get done posting here I'm going to continue reading. I'm at the part where Cleopatra saved Tully's ass from the Stilton idiots, Tully is on the ship, and he is reading a long letter from Willie Singer.
I have read A pirate Looks at Fifty twice, and I know before this year is over I will read it again. I love Tales From Margaritaville especially the 6 lessons from Freddie.

Be downered no more. I knew a woman who was 107 and extremely active! Her daughter was 88 and looked to be in her early 50's. So it can happen.MrTwain wrote:Absolutely, yes. The only one I haven't read more than once is Where Is Joe Merchant?

I've told my wife that A Salty Piece of Land is probably my favorite book. For some reason I relate to Tully so much. I'm not as shy as he is, though. But still.. I think I know how he felt, working in that fücking go-nowhere job all those years before finally kicking through the glass and leaving that skanky b**** of a boss he had. Good for him.

Maybe I'll have to re-read it too. After reading this post, I'm reminded of how I CRIED when Cleopatra died. And that quote of Tully's reminds me of Guy Clark's song about "always trust your cape."MrTwain wrote:Absolutely, yes. The only one I haven't read more than once is Where Is Joe Merchant?

Re: Gonna re-read A Salty Piece of Land
I finished the book last night, and I know that I will read it again. I was crying when Cleopatra died. Then I cried when all loose ends were tied up in the end. Tully falls in love with Cleopatra's grand niece. Now how is that for Cleopatra carma, and all of the other characters do well. I love the idea of the 101-year-old sea captain. There are a few 101-year-old women roaming this world that are quite active, so the idea really is not that far fetched.
Being visually impaired I love reading books where the author writes so well that I could go where the author is trying to take us and where I can almost see the events of the book happening. Jimmy's writing takes me to that place, and the way he writes provides me with a window that I can see through even if it is just for a little while.

Ehhhhh. What? That makes no sense. You don't like the book but you hail it up there with Hiaasen et al... so you're saying it's a great book but you don't like it?MrTwain wrote:After reading Where is Joe Merchant, I couldn't bring myself to read it again. ...sadly, Jimmy's WIJM had what it takes to compete with the others. It's my fave. The beauty of Where Is Joe Merchant is that JB gave us hints at some future songs and the characters are very tense and well researched/inspired. It's by far the best book he's written I think. I loved A Pirate Looks at Fifty too.
A Salty Piece Of Land was OK. Nothing great. It's not bad but it's not great. I bit long and scattered in places. I like the single better, I've got it in my own License To Chill sequencing since it's a leftover from those sessions. Interesting that the single didn't chart in the Billboard Top 200 because it should have.
