If Jimmy did a CD of covers....
If Jimmy did a CD of covers of other singers/acts what 12 - 14 songs would in your humble opinion would make the cut?
This can be a fun little topic so lets here your choices.

Re: If Jimmy did a CD of covers....
He practically already has a box set of covers on his albums if you add them up.
Still, of all songs he could cover? I would still love for him to do Day-O.

One song I would love to hear him do.....OK, let me back up. I heard this song on the radio the other day, and thought it would be a great song to re-do, but slow it down a bit, give it a reggae, or island vibe vibe. With Robert on the pans, Nadirah & Tina's back up vocals, and Peter's guitar work, I think Jimmy could pull it off....the song? "Don't Bring me Down" by ELO

If Jimmy was to do a covers album I would love for it to be island songs. Harry Belafonte is a good place to start. Even a studio recording of Jamaica Farewell would be nice.

Re: If Jimmy did a CD of covers....
I would prefer to hear country covers - I guess we got a taste of that on License to Chill. I think an old Haggard tune done with Merle and a Willie tune done with Willie plus a few cuts with more current artists like Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, and Lady Antebellum would be in order. I'd even add in a southern rock cut or two and produce it to Buffett's style. I think that would have great crossover appeal. Who wouldn't buy and enjoy Mama Tried with Buffett and Haggard singing it?
If we couldn't laugh we would all go insane ...

Thanks for the beer fridge reminder - I think I just might crack open one of mine while I put some Haggard music on!C-Dawg wrote:me neither....but I do have a well stocked bar and beer fridgeJollyMon66 wrote:JollyMon66 wrote:I would prefer to hear country covers - I guess we got a taste of that on License to Chill. Re: If Jimmy did a CD of covers....
I already sort of have this. BN Song & Lyrics Database + iPod playlist = custom covers "album".
It was actually kind of fun to go back through the many songs Jimmy sings that I've come to know and find out how many were not his originally.

Re: If Jimmy did a CD of covers....
I'd like to hear him cover something by Townes Van Zandt ... like "Brand New Companion" or "Fraternity Blues" - something that could be done with some wit.
I'd also LOVE to hear him cover Guy Clark's "The Cape."
Marcia Ball's "Peace, Love and BBQ" would be a hoot, too.

Re: If Jimmy did a CD of covers....
There are a lot of Grateful Dead originals and covers that Jimmy could do well. Heck, he's already got a good start with Uncle John's Band and Scarlet Begonias. I'd love to hear him sing Mama Tried. Also, Mexicali Blues, Alabama Getaway, One More Saturday Night, Dire Wolf, Brown-Eyed Women, Tennessee Jed, Friend of the Devil, Iko Iko, Ripple, Samba in the Rain (seems like a natural, n'est pas?), Sugar Magnolia, Touch of Grey, Jack Straw, Wharf Rat...JollyMon66 wrote:*** Who wouldn't buy and enjoy Mama Tried with Buffett and Haggard singing it? ***

Re: If Jimmy did a CD of covers....
I'm surprised no one has yet said "Two Piña Coladas". The first time I heard it I thought I *was* hearing a new Buffett song.

-"BB"-

"I'd rather die while I'm living than live while I'm dead."
"Some of it's magic, and some of it's tragic, but I've had a good life all the way."

Re: If Jimmy did a CD of covers....
I always thought that "Margarita" by Henry Kapono would be a natural for Jimmy to do sometime.......

Re: If Jimmy did a CD of covers....
I'd love to hear him cover James Taylor's "Captain Jim's Drunken Dream" and a good clean studio version of "If I had a Boat" would be nice.
I used to want to hear him do Loggins and Mesina's "Vahevala", but now I think the expanded Club Trini would do a great job on that with Peter and Nadira on vocals.

Some old Johnny Horton songs would be great like:
North to Alaska
Sink the Bismark
Whispering Pines
or
Truxton's Victory by Boarding Party
or
Cardiff Rose by Roger Mcguinn

Re: If Jimmy did a CD of covers....
basically take the weather with you and license to chill are covers albums. i know some people like the idea but for me it just fills the shows with even more songs from other artists, and further exiles the enormous list of "jimmy songs" he never plays.
