Best cover by Buffett?
What is the best cover that Buffett has done?
Squalls out on the Gulfstream,
Big storms coming soon.

"Southern Cross" is my favorite cover song at a CONCERT...but I really like his version of "Stars Fell On Alabama" also. There's a few more. He's covered a bunch of stuff. By the way...I know it's a sin, but I didn't mention "Brown Eyed Girl".

Another good one is "If I Had A Boat" but I like Lyle Lovett's version a little better.

Re: best cover by buffett?
While I am a fan of the earlier covers like Spider John and Big Rig and Biloxi and Lovely Cruise and Coast Of Marseilles and various others it's quite possible that the one cover Jimmy totally nailed is way more recent - Back To The Island.
For some reason when License To Chill came out I figured that had he decided to hang it up, he was just reiterating what he started with in Migration, that he really was getting ready to sell it all and head down island for the rest of his life. And the way that song is is beyond amazing I think - and way better than the original, like most of his covers are.

Fred Neil got that one right. Great tune. Didn't care for Nilsson's version actually.Papa T wrote:Love Harry Nilsson.pair8head wrote:For me, "Everybody's Talking"

Re: best cover by buffett?
I wasn't counting "It's My Job" as a cover since Mac did it and he's a Coral Reefer...but if we are counting that...I LOVE that song! And "Great Heart" was the first song he sang at my first concert...so it has a special place in my heart.chippewa wrote:My favorite is definitely Banana Republics, but I also love his versions of It's My Job, Trip Around the Sun, Great Heart, California Promises....and dozens others.

Re: Best cover by Buffett?
It would be a easier decision if we were naming worst cover.
Some of the covers that are worn out to others still have a special meaning. Like BEG is a reminder of one of my best friends.
I also like Scarlet Begonias while many can't stand it.

If we are naming worst covers..."Werewolves of London". He should have left that one with Zevon.

Re: Best cover by Buffett?
Without question, my favorite is "City of New Orleans".
Acoustic cover with Mac in the bleachers of Wrigley Field in 2005, as a tribute to his good friend and original writer of the song, Steve Goodman.
Though, I have to say that Jimmy's cover sounded much closer to the Arlo Guthrie cover of the song rather than the original. Perhaps it could be classified as a cover of a cover?
