I don't know that it's just the kids! I know that thoughts of suicide are common in children (and adults) with chronic and incurable diseases. Since I have two kids and a husband with chronic disease, I am constantly looking for signs of stress and depression. The rate of suicide among teens is also quite high but the "not my kid" attitude seems to be higher. I think a lot of parents just aren't paying attention to the warning signs!!!! It CAN happen to your kid!!! Stop buying them things to get them out of their funk and spend some serious time talking to them!!!! Ask them how their day was but don't accept "FINE" as an answer! Ask them what's wrong but don't accept "nothing" as an answer.
And pay attention to the warning signs:
- Talking about dying (Or any form of harming ones self)
- Recent loss or losses
- Change in personality (Sad, irritable, anxious, withdrawn, apathetic)
- Change in behaviors
- Change in sleep patterns (Can't sleep, nightmares, etc)
- Change in appetite (Not eating enough or overeating)
- Fear of losing control (Going "crazy")
- Loss of interest in things once enjoyed
- Low self esteem (Feeling worthless, self-hatred, a burden, shame)
- No hope for future (Believes things will never get better, nothing will change)
If someone you know exhibits these signs, talk to them, GIVE THEM HELP OR GET THEM HELP before it's too late.
Sorry for my rant but I don't want any of you to go through this!!!!

sad, tragic... and needless
I'm sure i'll get flamed for this, but....
This was an over-reaction by immature, young individuals to the Nth degree.
They need to be separated, sequestered, and counseled for a good long while.
It will take time to get these kids past this pain... just like it does with any of us after a shocking event.
This sad story is so many things, and senseless is certainly one of them.

Why would you get flamed for this? I agree with you. However, it's hard to put such a plan into action. And kids are good at hiding things. And sometimes bad at making good decisions. It's a scary time to be raising teenagers.

This time it's an adult woman, 40ish. They have not released her name but this being a small community, it has gotten out. She has been in a lot of trouble lately with the law and was supposed to begin serving time soon. Not a lot of time, 3 months, but apparently more than she could handle. Possible bi-polar disorder! We really need to stop stigmatizing the mentally ill and get them the help they need! She has 2 kids and a husband.

Rational minds cannot comprehend the actions of irrational beings........
Any unnecessary loss of life is tragic and we can only hope and pray for all troubled individuals within our communities.
