New Van Halen

Post by Tiki Torches »

The first single from the new Van Halen album, A Different Kind of Truth, which is due for release on February 7th. According to a recent interview Sammy Hagar did with Rolling Stone, several of the songs from the new record are updated versions of previously unreleased demos that date back to the early days of Van Halen. "Tattoo" is no exception, it's a newly fleshed out version of an old song that was originally intended to be included on Van Halen II called "Down In Flames". "She's the Woman", a song they played last week at Cafe Wha? in NYC also comes from an old demo.

Vintage clip set in California when surfing, skateboarding and most importantly, bikinis, were all the rage circa 1966.

Frontier Ruckus have become one of my favorite bands in recent years. The first time I saw them I told them that their music reminded me of "Gothic Ranch", inspired by "Some Gothic Ranch Action" from Rancho Deluxe. They seemed to get a big kick out of that. The last time they were in town they played the Hopscotch Music Festival. Following their set, they did a very impromptu performance for a few of us out on the street as they were loading out.

Never had heard this particular version until today. This was performed after David Allan Coe had recorded his own version so Goodman offers up his own take of the infamous improvised line. I like Goodman's new take on it better than Coe's. Just sayin'...

This is the third of the four Grateful Dead shows I saw between 1989 and 1995 and one of my very favorites of the four. There were lots of highlights on this evening but two of them were covers, their sublime version of Dylan's "Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again" and the Beatles' "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds", which came completely out of left field. The latter still sends shivers up and down my spine, just as it did on the night they played it.

Set 1
Jack Straw
Stagger Lee
Wang Dang Doodle
It Must Have Been The Roses
Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again
Tennessee Jed
Let It Grow

Set 2
Here Comes Sunshine
Playin' In The Band
Box Of Rain
Crazy Fingers
Drums
Space
Spanish Jam
Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad
Throwing Stones
Not Fade Away

Encore
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds

Can't necessarily be a "new take" afterall Goodman has been dead for almost 20 years. Not to mention that Goodman & John Prime wrote the song in the first place.
I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now!

I have feeling you're already aware of this but in the event that you're not, I meant "new" in the sense that it differs from the original recorded version. I also realize that Prine and Goodman co-wrote it. In that regard, Prine shares how that came to be in this intro to his version of the song:
