7-Eleven launching new private label beer under Game Day name

01:41 PM CDT on Monday, April 19, 2010
By KAREN ROBINSON-JACOBS / The Dallas Morning News

7-Eleven Inc. is diving into the highly competitive beer market with the launch of Game Day, a new store-brand premium lager beer, the Dallas-based convenience store giant said Monday.

The beer, which is expected to pour into 4,200 7-Eleven stores in 17 states, including Texas, will be positioned as a “premium lager beer at a below-premium price,” Dan Skinner, 7-Eleven’s category manager for alcohol beverages, said in a statement.

I'm betting most of us will.
Question is will Larry try it?
I'd set the morning line at 8 to 5 against.

Wild guess would be Anheuser-Busch.

However reading the article presents this paragraph....
7-Eleven is working with World Brews – a leading independent producer of premium beers – and City Brewery in La Crosse, Wis. to produce Game Day.

World Brews is a subsidiary of the Winery Exchange - http://www.wineryexchange.com/about_us.asp. I can't say I've heard of any of their beers but they are "the leading corporate brand beer supplier for premium quality beers from the USA, Latin America, and Holland." for what it's worth.

So basically, it's the opposite of Landshark? [smilie=cheeky-grin.gif]

Just for the record, the City Brewery in La Crosse was originally the flagship brewery of the former G. Heileman Brewery, probably best known as the producer of Old Style and Special Export beers. First established in 1858, it prospered. Beginning in the 1960s, they acquired several other regional breweries such as Blatz, Grain Belt, Rainier, Olympia, Henry Weinhard, and Lone Star. At its peak, Heileman's was the third largest brewer (after Anheuser-Busch and Miller) in the US.

Then along came Australian Alan Bond. He purchased Heilemans in the 1980s; however, lacking cash he financed the acquisition with what turned out to be junk bonds. When his empire collapsed, the company was forced to declare bankruptcy and was eventually bought by Stroh's; then, when Stroh's left the brewing business Heileman's labels ended up getting sold to other companies. The former Heileman brewery in La Crosse was left idle for a couple of years until a group of local investors bought it, renamed it "City Brewery" (the original name of the Heileman's Brewery in 1858) and started brewing again.

They brew several beers under their own labels such La Crosse Lager, City Lager, Kül Lager, as well as light variants of these, and also do contract brewing for other companies. As a matter of fact, in an ironic twist of fate, the "Old Style" and "Special Export" labels were purchased by Pabst Brewing of Milwaukee; however, they do not own a brewery of their own, so they contracted with City Brewery to brew these beers .... back in La Crosse........

So it's quite possible that the "Game Day" you buy at some 7-Eleven someday will be coming from God's Country.
