Dukes on Sunday

Post by TraderRick »

I know there are those of you who may have already seen this YouTube video ...but it just surpassed 4000 hits! I'm kinda proud of that. In any case if you haven't seen it- Dukes on Sunday is a very cool place to be and I go back as often as I can.

Nice.....I hope to get there someday! :pirate:

Last there on Feb 26/2010

We stayed at the Moana Surfrider right next door. We will never forget that trip as the tsunami hit that Saturday and we were evacuated. No harm came (thank God) but it was scary. It would have been so sad to see such a wonderful place destroyed.
Dukes was the very first place my husband and I ever ate in Hawaii. Jan 28/2008. Arrived in Honolulu at 6 and were watching the sunset from Dukes with drink in hand...........ahhhhh we love Hawaii!!!

Yeah, Henry Kapono has been a musical icon in the Islands for decades. He was part of the popular singing duo Cecilio & Kapono...which hit their stride in the '70s & '80s. I grew up there thru high school & have lived on the mainland the last 30+ years. I go back every couple of years to visit family and visit old haunts. As you probably know "Dukes on Sunday" was written by Henry. Here's one of my favorites from Cecilio & Kapono circa 1974...

Great place!
Had a business trip to Waikiki earlier this month (tough duty), and my wife and I stopped by there daily - including Sunday!!

P.S. Buffett's "Surf Museum" was a bit of a disappointent - just a small bar with a few not-so-old surfboards on the wall and a few kitschy items in cases. We must have been off-season, 'cuz Margaritaville only opened at night. Breakfast on the plaza was excellent, however.
We'll party just like Bubba does,
We'll do the Old Man proud!

Truth of the matter is times are very tough in the hospitality industry there. One of my family members is in management with the Outrigger Hotels and they have been cutting costs ( jobs, hours, your name it) to the bone. What you see is not so much off season..but an off economy. :-?

So that's Dukes. Looks crowded and not what I had in my mind but I'd go at least once.

That's what we initially thought when we got there. But it's a happy, mellow kind of crowd... like a Parrothead pre-function cluster phlocking. Picture the Street Party in Vegas...only with a beach. Truth is Waikiki beach is a busy place on a Sunday and Dukes is definitely a magnet. :D
