Set Lists

Post by Redleg Parrothead »

Well I hate to sound negative but I think the set list has become a little stale the past 2-3 years. I always love Jimmy's cover of Southern Cross and Brown Eyed Girl for example. But have never heard some of my favorite Buffett tunes live like Livingston Saturday Night, Nautical Wheelers, Kinja or Lone Palm, and I've been to 13 shows. Also he's hardly done WDWGDAS much the past few years. Anyway I'm just wondering if anyone else feels the same?

I think most (or at least lots) of us think that not having WDWGDAS is a good thing, and, while I like Brown Eyed Girl, skipping it might be a sign that he is trying to mix things up a little more than usual.

Last year the setlist did not change much from show to show. These two shows this week had a fair number of changes from past years, and from each other.

So I think the timing of your post might be a little off--let's see how this setlist evolves first.

I totally agree with ejr. I think he's brought back some real gems these first couple of shows and I think we're in for a real treat this year. I'm just happy to see Jimmy and hear him sing just about anything. And, oh, I also don't miss WDWGDAS.

I hear ya. I've posted several times on here over the past couple of years about the repetitiveness of Jimmy's setlists given the wealth of great material he has to choose from. Then you always get people responding who say the show would be ruined for them if he doesn't play Brown-Eyed Girl, or Volcano, or Southern Cross, or any of the other songs he plays EVERY single show.

After the first two shows of the new tour, it looks like they may have finally dropped BEG from the set list. They did not play it in Tampa and I don't think they played it tonight. I love the song and love Jimmy's version of it, but I'll gladly trade it in to hear an extra rarity or two. Hopefully those who go to Buffett concerts to hear BEG will realize that a Buffett concert is still a great time and one song does not make or break a show.

Btw, WDWGDAS was an every show staple for many years but they finally retired it a couple of years ago. For those of us who have been going to Buffett shows for over 20 years, I absolutely don't miss it and hope they keep it retired.

Also, am very pleased to see they shook up the set list a bit more tonight in Atlanta and broke out "Woman Going Crazy on Caroline Street," "Take Another Road," and "Off to See the Lizard." Now those are songs you don't see Jimmy play too often, which makes it real special when you get to experience it.

I also am enjoying JB shaking it up a bit. Don't miss BEG at all. LOVED all the new mix of music and hope he continues taking a chance on the tightrope given all the music he has. I think everyone has their favorites and even mine haven't been played but you know I am just enjoying something different being played. For that, "thank you."

I have been very happy with the shows on this tour so far. He has not been doing the same stuff, and he has changed the setlist with the past two shows. I think we will be in for a nice treat this tour.

I'm with all of you. Do you think half the problem is we all like most of his songs and we are all having a good time. When a song comes on we all cheer, dance and sing along. If we all walked out for a break, beer or all sat down he would think "might give that one a miss next time" but we give no indication we don't like a particulare song.

I totally agree with you Chris! I do not miss BEG. Of course, he has to do some of the hits that everyone knows, because the reality is, he is playing to the masses where more than half the people only know the hits. There are so many songs that I would love Jimmy to do, but I also know that if he did everything that I would want over half the people would scratch their heads and leave. I'm just glad that we have another summer with jimmy because the year is going to come when he will be done with full scale touring. I hope that year will not come for a while.

I think he's knows that the time for him to stop touring is sooner rather than later (no I'm not starting a rumor that this is his last tour) and he wants to play songs for the fans who have been around for a while but he also doesn't want to disappoint his new fans too so he is trying to mix and match.
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Life is short, live long!!

I get the impression that Jimmy is surprised that he has actually been doing this for so long. The guy still loves being on stage, and he won't be one of these musicians that is on stage just going through the motions looking bored as hell. I do think that he will be done with full scale touring sooner than later, but for now, I am greatful for every summer we have and will savor the flavor.

Agreed. I dont miss wdwgdas or BEG. My assessment so far though is that the songs he has picked that are "lesser known" have been played frequently on recent tours. In other words, dig deeper.

I'm glad my post generated lots of good discussion. Of course I love hearing Jimmy's hits; he HAS to do those and I want to hear them every show. But that's maybe 7 or 8 songs out of the 28-30 that he does every show. Lots of opportunities to play any of his hundreds of tunes. Like someone said above, "dig a little deeper". He's still and always will be my favorite performer. I just want to hear more variety. A few others I've never heard that I love: "Barometer Soup" "Migration" "Door Number 3". See what I'm saying? lol

Totally agree with this. The set lists so far on the Big Top tour have not been that different than the usual. So maybe he's retired BEG, but that's about it. I really like the lesser known tunes he played in Atlanta but thought the alternates in Tampa were pretty weak. I also agree he should dig deeper (although I really appreciate him doing "Woman Going Crazy on Caroline Street" and really hope he plays it when he gets out here to the Bay Area in October).

couldnt agree more. the setlists for the first two nights i've heard even the lesser known songs played in concert on recent tours.for example women going crazy on caroline street, cuban crime of passion, tampico trauma, school boy heart, license to chill, lovely cruise, knees of my heart, jamaica mistaica, etc. and all of them were played on entire tours not to long ago.

On my Ipod, I have a Playlist of 720+ Jimmy songs thanks to Sunlover and all of Jimmy's cd's. I remember last year at Alpine, we were playing music and such and someone in our group said "Play something that everyone knows", while Migration was playing in the background. So what is my point....I feel that Jimmy needs to please everyone by playing the "familiar" songs that we all get tired of to the concertgoers that just go to drink and hear Margaritaville or Five O' Clock Somewhere and those are the same people that can't name members of the Coral Reefer band. And yet there are many of us that know his whole library and wish he would play some of the rarities or originals he has done. I agree with all of the posts here that the setlist this year so far looks pretty good, but when you like an artist like Jimmy, you wish the show could be 4+ hours long to hear all the songs you would love to hear live.

Overall the set lists for Big Top have been great!!! they will never be perfect and he will always play Buffett 101 songs because thats what gets the masses in the seats(along with the tailgate experience). as long as he pulls some rarer or little played songs from the vault it will be a great year. Labor Day weekend show is a long ways off. Can only hope and imagine what he will play then. I as for 101 songs I like hearing boat drinks again

Yeah, but he could play a few less "Buffett 101" songs and I don't think it's going to hurt his ticket sales (if Buffett is honestly worried about that at this point in his career).

Btw, he "unretired" BEG tonight in St. Louis.
