Re: Sign in if your done with BP forever!
Whether a boycott of BP makes sense or not, I can't image the embarrassment I would feel if I was pumping gas at a BP station and the local newspaper came and took my picture and asked me about the spill. I mean "crawl into a hole" type of embarrassment. I would plead with the reporter not to use my photo, and they sure wouldn't get my name.
I won't be taking that chance.
You sound like a typical smug American that "knows all" with such a fatalistic response. My response is logical and practical. I made a decision and I expressed it. There is no big deal about that. Shell is the only other company that is doing deep water drilling. They've destroyed a lot of the wetlands as it is. I don't buy gasoline from them either. That's my choice.
For the record I'm not your "typcial smug American"...I hold the passport of a different nation. And I'm sorry to hear you have such a low opinion of the typical American. I find Americans to be wonderful people, that's why I reside here.
Now go tell your parents they should be monitoring your internet access before you make more of a fool of yourself.
Cheers

Alright there wiscoleeds, nevermind, you win. My apologies. Ignore my 'blathering' and my geographical poking.
Re: Sign in if your done with BP forever!
Wait, before wiscoleeds is declared the winner I think he should present his papers and prove he is in the country legally.
Rub yours on me and I'll rub mine on you

Perhaps they were born in Hawaii before it was a State?

OK - I Am done with BP. Not only will I not do business at their stores - I sold $ 20,000 of stock at a huge loss this week. So I am voting with my wallet whether it affects BP or not. I do have a conscience!

Re: Sign in if your done with BP forever!
I'm not buying gas at BP. It may not make a difference, but I'll drive past a BP station to do business with another "retailer"ph4ever wrote: "Big business" employees most of us.
Okay let's talk some real facts here. In the US there are 10,837 BP stations (according to BP website). Being very conservative let's say that each station employees 3 people; the owner and 2 employees. If every BP station closed that would create an instant 32,511 people out of a job. Some states have literally hundreds of BP stations while others a handfull. Those states that have hundreds will have an affect on other industries that supply the BP stations with everything from doodads to widgets will find their sales reduced, and it's quite possible they will have to reduce their work force as a result. So more people could loose their job.
Considering the US is trying to pull out of a recession you really think doing something that could cause more people not already affected by this to loose their jobs over a boycott is a good thing?
Boycotting BP is not going to result in 32,000 at local stations losing their jobs, because:
A: Unless you personally change your dependence on gas/oil, you are still going to buy the same amount of gas. If other stations are busier, they may add employees to keep up with the demand. Regardless, the same amount of spending is still occurring.
B: Contracts aside, most station owners will change brands instead of shutting down their gas stations. They are businessmen and women who are going to protect their investment. Their contracts may contain an out clause for a damaging situation such as this.
C: Whether by boycott, shopping for the lowest price, or personal preference, your buying habits result in retail jobs being lost. If you don't believe this, visit your local mall (if it still exists) If a consumer is truly concerned about local businesses being shut down, they shouldn't drive past a local retailer to shop at a "big box" stores Shopping online vs. a local retailer probably cuts more jobs, than a boycott would.

By the way, if anyoe wants to read about the effects of the oil industry (and the Corp of Engineers) on the Bayou way of life, I highly recommend. It provides great insite on how our societies "improvements" have changed the Cajun way of life:
