I am. I was even driving around today and saw a station with EXTREMELY low priced gas, went to pull in because it was so cheap and not because i really needed it but then I realized it was a BP station and kept going.

So sign in if you will never set foot in one of their stations again!

It is so very easy to become protesters today after the fact.
We need to take a hard look at ourselves and ask why more of us
perhaps weren't more vocal about deep water drilling 1 month,
2 months, 1 year ago ......

..... as we were "driving around" consuming gasoline and taking for granted
that the supply of fuel would be over at the corner gas station when we
needed to fill up the tank. The corner gas station probably owned/managed
by someone living in our community.

I'm not excusing BP or letting them off the hook for anything.

But I perhaps shouldn't be so quick to judge, as I drive my
V-8 crew cab truck around with it's 14 mpg.

Maybe, just maybe I created this mess.

Then my comment is not aimed at you,
but at myself
and the vast majority of us
who don't actively *get angry and involved*
until after the fact.

It's easy to to point fingers now.

I'm fine with after the fact.
Hey if people can boycott Wally World, Arizona and whatever else then surely I can boycott BP for the biggest oil spill/leak in U.S. history.

I will continue to go with BP if they have a good price. I'll tell you why.

September 11th, 2001. Terrorist attack on the USA creates a panic. Due to the potential for a war with oil-bearing nations, most gas stations spike their prices....the one closest to where I was working that day went from $1.65 to $4.45 in an hour. One company that came out and made a public statement that day, assuring that no station affiliated with BP would raise prices without losing their affiliation with BP. Consequence? Other companies followed suit. Prices came back to where they belonged...at all stations, and didn't spike again until 2005.

OK, BP has screwed up royally in the last month. I'm willing to cut them some slack based on their history...and hope they get the problem fixed. I won't go out of my way to avoid them, I won't go out of my way to patronize them. I will simply continue to gas up where ever I find a good price.

What gas companies are endorsed by those that choose to boycott BP? Can you please tell me which ones have systems in place to prevent any and all accidents?
Cheers

Yeah, I'm not big on the whole BP boycott. Stuff happens, especially at almost a mile down. I do have concerns about BP's safety record though. They've had quite a few serious problems at their facilities over the years. Laxity in safety protocols seems to have been an issue in this one, from what little I've read.

I think the better solution is for the U.S. to strike back.
Maybe sink an oil tanker or two just off the coast of Britain

OK with me if you want to boycott BP-branded stations. But the day of name-brand service stations like Texaco, Shell, Mobil, Standard, and the rest are long gone; in fact, we've got only one, maybe two, in my neck of the woods. Most of our gasoline is sold through convenience stores like Casey's, Kwik Trip, SuperAmerica, and so on, and these people all get their gasoline pretty much off the same tanker truck.

Once that oil has been taken out of the ground and refined into 89-octane unleaded, it's almost impossible to tell just whose oil it was to start with. So what's a fella to do?

Also keep in mind if you boycott BP stores- in many cases you may be hurting "mom and pop" stores who just happen to sell BP gasoline. And as Bicycle Bill already pointed out, some may no longer be named BP.....

what can you do? Demand that we tighter restrictions on operations such as this. I;m not saying get rid of off shore drilling because I'm darn sure that I don't want my money lining the pockets of the foreign oil conglomerates. But demand that the government holds these companies more accountable....more checks and balances in place....

Nope, the BP stations here a locally owned and operated, not gonna hurt the local workers. BP wouldn't feel a thing if I boycotted the local stations.

There is no question that BP's solution response has been weak. Like 99.99% of Americans, I know nothing about deep sea drilling but have to believe that if you are in that business you should have proper contingency plans for anything and everything that “could” happen. BP screwed up and hopefully other drillers have gone back to the drawing board to look at their operations.

I’m a pretty conservative guy and basically don’t like the Federal government stepping in to solve private industry problems. This is a different situation however…it’s impacting our gulf shore economy, families, and the environment. Why hasn’t the Obama administration stepped in and taken over this situation with the Army Core of Engineers? We can be ticked at BP but the real heat (in my opinion) belongs to our politicians.

That’s my Sunday morning soap box :D

LOL how did that Exxon boycott work out? As part of the boycott are other oil byproducts like plastics, synthetic fabrics and tires? Will you stop driving on newly paved asphalt roads? There are three gas stations around me that have the lowest price fuel, BP is one of them I will continue to purchase gas there.

That aside - it pains me to say that I still think they should have "nationalized" this problem after BP clearly had no solution. :(

No one had/has a viable solution. A deep water accident such as this that failed all *checks* to stop it from happening in the first place clearly had no quick fix solution for the worst case scenario. It is literally *uncharted waters*. Texaco, Shell, Exxon ...... sadly it appears that no one has a solution else I would hope the other oil companies would have stepped in to help. My guess is that the other companies who already have or have bid on getting offshore deep welling operations are scrambling and learning on the fly as we speak.

Again I won't let BP off the hook. Serious investigations must continue and answers and accountability must be forthcoming. If safety protocols were ignored we must know. If federal regulations and oversight were lacking we must know. But to boycott BP and let the other oil companies off the hook I don't think is the solution. Texaco, Shell, Mobil, Exxon ..... are probably breathing a huge sigh of relief that they didn't slip up first.

I read an article in the Washington Post a week or so ago about the *fine line* that many environmental groups are walking right now. On the one hand, their messages of anger are an obligation. On the other hand, there's no denying that these environmental groups also promoted the fact that they are working as partners with big oil on environmental issues, and they have accepted tens of millions of dollars from BP and other oil companies. (STORY HERE).

It's a complicated issue, and as I said in my first post, I wasn't as concerned or angry or as involved as I could have been last month or last year as I drove my truck around and heated my home not worrying as much about where/how the oil came from.

This was actually done moments after the fire started on the rig according to the pressy held by Obama on Friday. He stated that he was responsible and running the cleanup and leak stopping operation.
Make no mistake: BP is operating at our direction
Our teams are authorized to direct BP
They want his thing capped as badly as anybody does. It is a legitimate concern to question whether BP’s interests in being fully forthcoming about the extent of the damage aligns with the interest of the public.
If this is true, then I assume the administration approved the dumping the hundreds of thousands of gallons of dispersant into the Gulf. I do wonder if they read the MSDS before approving this action. The health problems the cleanup workers are experiencing now are a direct cause of the dispersant and these effects are well documented on the MSDS for the chemical.
