Key West Honeymoon...

MrsTwain and I are planning a honeymoon getaway to celebrate our 20th Anniversary together. When we were married way back when, we didn't take a honeymoon because we were dirt poor and could barely pay for a VHS rental. But now, here we are and ready to go. But, we're stuck on not knowing what to do.

We've never been to Key West, and we're very interested in going there. (True Story: We've never been on a trip, just the two of us, unless it was a company-sponsored trip where everyone else in the office went, too. But this would be just for us.)

We're looking to fill up 3 days. Fly in early one morning to Ft Lauderdale, drive the A1A, arrive in KW and spend 3 nights before driving drive back to Ft Lauderdale to catch the flight home. If it were you, where would you stay? What would you do? Is there any entertainment? Shows? Museums? Great places to eat, etc?

There's no shortage of places to have a good time. Some of my favs are:

The Turtle Kraals - check out the box turtle races (I think on Friday evenings)

Captain Tony's - a place you must stop at - be sure to hit the head before you leave and take a business card along to add to the collection. Your wife can donate her bra as well

Caroline's - I think a great place for lunch

Hogs Breath - cool atmosphere

Sloppy Joes (over commercialized in my opinion but it is an institution there)

If you need to get out of the bars for some fresh air - the Conch Train is worth grabbing a ride on. The tour lasts I think about an hour or so and will take you to all the important sites in Key West. I think the knock on this is that it doesn't really stop to let you get out for a few minutes.

Penny and I stopped at Alabama Jack's on Card Sound Road and Lorelei's on the way to Key West

We stayed at La Pensione. http://www.lapensione.com/ We went to a beach every morning and hung by the pool in the afternoons.

We had great meals at Salute', Kelly's and Fogarty's. The tourist bars are ok but don't miss the Green Parrot and the outdoor bar at Don's.

We enjoyed a sunset cruise on the Schooner Liberty.

It's all good, some of it's just gooder than others.

We love Blue Heaven.

I also thought the snorkel trip on the Sebago was fun.

Gotta do BO's Fishwagon. Great Picadillo. Blonde Giraffe for Key Lime Pie dipped in CHOCOLATE. YUM!

We also enjoyed going to the top of the Lighthouse. The last time we went we did the Island Trolley, but since you have a car you can see all of that. What we liked was the narration on the trolley and you can get on and off IF there is available space.

There is also a snorkel trip out of Key Largo where you can dive down to touch the statue of Christ.

If I were you, I'd spend one night in Key Largo or Islamorada just so you can have plenty of time to go to Alabama Jacks and do some sight seeing around Key Largo. There is a Pennecamp Coral Reef State Park with glass bottom boats that takes about 3 hours.

As E said, Lorelei is a neat stop. So is the Bass Pro Shop at Islamorada

Read up on Cap't Tony's/Sloppy Joes. MY FIL was stationed down there during that little issue we had with Cubar (note the NE accent ) anyway, Cap't Tony used to take the Navy inlisted men fishing for free or next to nothing. Great PR for the drinking establishment.

Try to watch the old videos of Jimmy in KW back in the 70's and compare it to today. That part was very cool!! The Truman Laundrymat was still there, right down from Rancho Deluxe.

Oh, and cash will get you a bottle of rum out the back door of a bar after the stores are closed

I heard some BNers mention El Siboney so the wife and I went there last year.
I had some kind of awesome pork plate with black beans, cuban bread and sangria wine.
It was orgasmic and we can't wait to get back!

The accomodations are fabulous, the staff is friendly and helpful and the prices are VERY reasonable. Breakfast is to die for. The place is romantic and conveniently located, about 5 blocks from Duval and 4 blocks from the Harbor.

Check out Michael McCloud at the Schooner Wharf. And I second BO's Fishwagon and all the other suggestions here. Also stop at El Meson de Pepe's on Mallory Square for a the best mojito ever. They've been making them for years...long before they TGIFridays and Cheesecake Factory discovered them.

Mmmm...El Siboney!!! The Siboney skirt steak and sangria makes me hungry thinking about it!!!

Camille's for breakfast has White Chocolate Godiva Liquer French Toast with fresh strawberries on top! YUM!

Since I've only been down there for MOTM, I usually find that most of my activites are pub crawling to see the next trop-rock entertainer. I would contact Tim Glancey with Tales of Key West tour. He'll show you some really cool stuff that you didn't even know was there including Shrimp Boat Sound (not that's it's anything spectacular to look at).

If you like shrimp, be sure to get some Key West pink gold shrimp....and also some grouper! Oh and if you're craving some pizza, Upper Crust on Duval is fabulous!

To stay, I recommend Key West Harbour Inn on Elizabeth street. It's basically right in between Duval Street and Schooner Wharf, and yet still very quiet at night. They do a daily happy hour, free beer and wine (or at least they did, it's been a couple of years) and they have a pool and a hot tub. The location can't be beat and the prices are (or at least were0 the best in the area.

For a great dinner, Rooftop Cafe, 308 Front street. It's on the second story, mostly outdoor seating on a big deck, once again right downtown and close to everything but still quiet and relaxed. The food is fantastic, Chef Brendan is amazing and the owners Norman and Wednesday are wonderful people, can't be beat.

Beyond that, all I can say is there is so much to do 3 days is gonna be tough to squeeze it all in. Have a great time!

Sing a love song at Two Friends Patio karaoke--they have it every night. We stayed at Heron House right off Caroline and it was beautiful; quiet and romantic with a beautiful pool/patio area, continental breakfast, and a daily happy hr. Loved it!
