Here's a few:

Gordon Lightfoot
John Denver
Bob Dylan
Be sure to check out The Greatful Dead too

and be sure to listen to some Emmy Lou Harris, just becasue no one else in the world has a voice like hers

I'm in a John Prine revival mode myself these days.

More later as my mind leaves work and can focus on important things.

John Prine ... bar none ... is my favorite performer and songwriter.

The man can write lyrics that will just blow you away.

Do not pass up any opportunity to see him in concert.

As Gary (Wino) wuld say. JP was in NO CAL earlier this year and "things did not work out...." My little bro has shared with me on numerous ocasions that some of his BEST memories are driving dirt roads in a National Forrest, drinking a few beers and listening to JP. I gotta add THAT experience to my Bucket List. Thanks SP!

Favorite 5 songs
Oh Gawd (only five?).
It depends on my mood.
Sometimes I want the simple; sometimes the rock; sometimes the ballads, amazing lyrics and message;
sometimes the early JP; sometimes the later.
One thing I'll say ..... I have never heard a John Prine song that I didn't like.

1. Fish and Whistle (for it's simplicity and message)
2. Illegal Smile (the first song I heard him sing and the encore from the first time I saw him in concert back in '78)
3. Paradise (of course)
4. Souvenirs (okay, a Steve Goodman song, but John gives it everything)
5. Spanish Pipedream
("Well, I sat there at the table and I acted real naive
For I knew that topless lady had something up her sleeve")

Holy Crap! I have to leave out Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore, Sam Stone, Picture Show, Unwed Fathers (simple amazing), The Late John Garfield Blues, Saddle In The Rain, Dear Abby, Storm Windows, Jesus The Missing Years, LAKE MARIE!!!! :o , It's A Big Old Goofy World, Angel From Montgomery, DONALD AND LYDIA!!! :o , That's The Way That The World Goes Round, Please Don't Bury Me, ......... :o :o

Watch this through to Steve Goodman's amazing solo in the second part of the video.

What a great video....thanks for posting it SP.
That has been one of my favorites since the first time I heard it.
I agree.....it would be way to hard to pick just 5 songs or 5 cd's

JP has a new live cd out that is really good and there is a 2 disc set called
Anthology from the early 90's that would be a great place to start.

There are also a lot of great live shows floating around out in the internet.

I have John's newest CD set .... I was one of the first 200 to order it the day it went on sale last month,
so it came with bonuses .... including an actual *hand autographed by John* poster.
Very nice and now framed and in my basement bar.

Yes ... for anyone new ... get Anthology and check out the new live CD. John can best be appreciated *live*
as he tells stories introducing each song. Great rapport with his audience.

As far as song writers go you all have a great list going and I can see only one hole in that list.

Sir Elton John.

I wasn't gonna be the first to bring up any English song writers, but I too thought of Elton . . .

And those Lennon/McCartney lads weren't too bad either!

I've been building the collections since you and Gary raved about JP's music a while back. I'll be sure to make sure your recomendations make it into the i pod vault. JP recorded a great album , "In Spite of Ourselves," where he sings duets with the likes of Emmylou Harris, Iris, DeMent, Connie Smith and Lucinda Williams that's become a favorite too.

Regarding American Folk Music

Pete Seger
Woodie Guthrie
Joni Mitchel

and then you can blend in some Carol King... probably a few more, but the coffee has to kick in and I really need to pack for a trip.
