Rolling Stones Top 500 Songs

Post by piratenurse »

Guess who didn't make the list, no big surprise.

Guess who made the list, about halfway through...Rod Stewart. Ok, Maggie May is a classic. But that's not what I'm talkin' about...it is....get ready for it....

"Do Ya Think I'm Sexy"....

Even Rod Stewart knows that song sux!!!!!

Really? Really. Who knows what critics think. Glad I just looked it over in a pharmacy and didn't pay for the magazine. Some of the other songs truly belonged there. What do you guys think?

Although Rolling Stone magazine does get progressively worse and worse...and Jimmy has written some good songs.

In my humble opinion, nothing he has written deserves to be in the Top 500 Songs category.

Just my opinion.

Margaritaville is a top 500 song. It is the cornerstone of a genre of rock generation music. Whether you are sick of it or not, there's a reason it's his most popular song.

I thought Margaritaville would be on this list.

Does this top 500 include country? if it does then I would agree that Margaritaville should probably make the list. I really don't consider it a rock song or pop.

Although do you think I'm sexy is horrible, it was a #1 hit for weeks, there are a lot of Rod Stewart songs that were great they didn't sell as well. As long as it isn't in the top 400 I'm ok with it.

and yeah, rolling stone has been a rotting pile of crap for years.

Margaritaville is a song about lazy days on the beach. Is it one of the top 500 rock songs of all times? No.

It's his most influential songs, maybe not this best. No, it does not deserve to be in Rolling Stones list.

If a country magazine did a similar list, I would put Jimmy Buffett on there. Jimmy has never influenced anyone like Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, Fats Domino, Little Richard, Chuck Berry or Jerry Lee Lewis.

That's not putting him down. It's just a fact. He's not really been an influential person in the history of rock 'n roll. In country music? Certainly.

Absolutely disagree. At the time, Buffett was as rock and roll as Marshall Tucker, Jim Croce, Jerry Jeffetc. Young people were establising a genre of country rock, or southern rock. Shortly after it evolved into progressive country and has continued to blur lines to this day. Today, Buffett is accepted as country, but at the time, he was under the very large umbrella of rock and roll. If you are old enough to remember buying albums, Buffett was in the Rock rack.

I agree with you on that point, but to the general public...nothing Jimmy Buffett has recorded is what you think of when "classic rock 'n roll" is mentioned.

Nothing he's written compares to Like a Rolling Stone, Hey Jude, Hound Dog, Maybellene, Blueberry Hill, or Tutti Frutti, Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On...in terms of influence to the rest of Rock 'n Roll.

I think Jimmy Buffett would probably agree.

Sorry but I have and will always believe that Margaritaville
is the "Wife/girl just left suddenly and the poor guy is shell shocked so He hits the Beach (and the Booze)" song..

Or just the "divorced mans National Anthem" 8)

Does the magazine have any mention in the article of what their criteria was for picking songs?

Ragtop is absolutely right. The final irony about the song is it is totally a downer song if interpreted literally and how I believe it was written. This is a perfect example of an "artist intention " lesson plan opportunity for you English teachers out there!!

I really struggle with lists like this. It doesn't seem to matter what the criteria is - I don't agree with mosts lists. Margaritaville DOES belong on this list considering the overall musical influence the song has had to county/country pop.

To prove my point that these lists are worthless I looked at the top 10 - WHAT? Good Vibrations #6 and Smells Like Teen Spirit #9? Please tell me how the following songs shouldn't be ranked higher than Vibrations and Teen Spirt:

#14 - Blowin in the Wind
#21 - Born to Run
#27 - Layla
#30 - I Walk the Line
#31 - Stairway to Heaven
#35 - Light My Fire
#47 - Bridge Over Troubled Water

One interesting fact that does support my long-standing point that the 1960's and 1970's produced the overall "best" music...according to this list 326 songs or 65% were out from 1960-1979.

I'm not sure how you accurately and mathmatically determine the Top 500 songs. That's the only way to, I think, accurately determine it. Otherwise, you are asking people's opinion. Which is shaped by many many factors. According to Wikipedia (yes, I realize the source), "the song list was chosen based on votes by 172 musicians, critics, and music-industry figures." So there you go. A bunch of music industry people determining the Top 500. Experts? Not really. They may be experts in producing, marketing and selling music but why should they determine what song is better than another?

And another reason to laugh at this list is that Rush, a band that has been around since 1974, put out almost 20 albums and sold millions of records, doesn't even have one song on the list. It's all a farce. [smilie=pimp.gif]

I like Good Vibrations, but I don't think it should be top 10 (maybe top 25). Margaritaville definately should be a Top 500 song, as well as A Pirate Looks at 40 (Dylan and Jack Johnson have both covered it, to say the least).

Ah well. My personal Top 500 is loaded with Buffett songs! :D

Yeah who cares what Rolling Stone thinks?
I for one could give two craps about the Beatles, Elvis, Dylan and the like. Not saying they're not great just not my bag. In the end, my top 500 is all that matters to me and there are plenty of Buffett songs in there. But then who cares what I think?
